Yes at Perisher we have to get our equipment signed off.
They made ya Register your board?????
Is that common (and current) practice for resort workers everywhere, or just SP?????
Very common practice to have an equipment check at resort if you are required to Ski/board as part of your job.
So lifties, instructors, patrollers.
A leash used to be part of this not sure now… cause I don’t board for work.
But yeah people used to do what Tj did and all share a leash to get signed off.
As an instructor, we never had equipment checks working at Whistler Blackcomb or Thredbo. Actually, I’ve never even heard of it. I can also tell you for sure there wasn’t a leash rule in Whistler and NO ONE there uses leashes. The only equipment they ever banned was the Burton Love snowboard which had semi-naked Playboy models on the topsheet (I thought it was very tasteful haha).
Actually, at Thredbo our supervisor told us it’s technically a rule, albeit a stupid one, so carry a shoelace in your pocket just incase you ran into a power tripper. Quickly just tie the board to your boot type of thing. Even so, I never carried a shoe lace.
EDIT: This is to save you searching for the Burton Love.
Yeah leashes haven’t been part of it for years now.
But we have to get checked at Perisher.
Will have ask Andy if he gets checked.
Thoughts?
It’s all about education & knowing how to put your board down or off correctly. Knowing how to strap in correctly etc.
I personally don’t use a leash & I’ve never had my board run off on me.
I completely agree with this.
I haven’t had a board run away from me in 12 seasons. I was a beginner too, just like everyone else. But in my first lesson we were taught what to do with our boards so they don’t run away.
Long leashes may actually have a purpose if you can walk with them, but like you said Mud 90% of leashes are short leashes and they serve absolutely no purpose since you have to take them off to walk anyway.
I have my own version of a leash however. It’s the most effective ever made and it’s an exciting new product ready for testing in 2015!!
It’s called: A Hand!!!
All humans come equipped with 2 of these from birth, but apparently many can’t operate them without special training.
I will be running training courses out of Perisher on - “Human Attachment Negates Disappearing Snowboards” Or “H.A.N.D.S.”
This course can also be found under the name “Level 1 Snowboard Lesson”
To answer your quest Oz:
No, I don’t have to wear a leash at work or have to get an equipment check with one.
And just as a side note, while I do think a long leash makes more sense than a short leash, that implies that the person with the leash has any sense in the first place.
Most long leashes that I see are usually linked from one binding to the other and used as a handle to carry the board around
Then they remain in that position while the guy rides down the hill. Leash flapping in the breeze like a boss!
Until said leash goes under the board causing it to stop without warning

Sorry if I am confusing people.
Yes leashes aren’t required anymore.
I thought people were surprised about the equipment check happening at all and I said it was common practice at a lot of resorts.
So Andy do you have an equipment check at all?
We do.

Just a check. Think it was more just to check for graphics and to make sure you didn’t have faulty equipment that could cause accidents and then law suits.
I’m pretty sure it’s commonplace at most resorts for staff that need to ride “for” work. Ticketers, servers etc didn’t need to and still got their free season passes.

I can understand resorts makin sure their employees aren’t on the hill in Corporate Gear, with a board that has porn or obscenities on it!!!!!
Especially a family orientated one!!!!!
Was it a one off, random thing????? Or did they check every so often?????

Yeah we do too
What do they check for exactly? Like an instructor or patroller doesn’t know how to screw their bindings on properly, or whatever…
that they are in good working order!
A lot of old schoolers don’t change their ski boots, worn soles of a ski boot can affect the bindings working properly.
They also check DIN settings on ski’s - can’t have people crankin’ em down!
But yeah you would just change em back LOL
oh i though this topic was about leash that woman my have on someone…
eg Jeremy is on leash by his boss.
yes yes i know i am funny say no more.
Well, well, Lano. You are certainly one to talk! Haha
i was just talking from experience..
Is this thread gonna have to be shut down?????
