Hey Guys,
You might have read in the Canada post that the missus and I are heading to Canada for our first season at a resort. We are pretty excited and can’t wait to get over and get stuck in. We plan on spending a few days in Vancouver and hopefully buy all our gear there before we head over to Jasper. Just had a few quick questions for you Canada regulars.
What sort of phone plan can you get over there and who should we go with? We will be looking to get a prepaid or month to month plan since we will be over there for at least 7 months.
Also any Boadworld members working in Jasper for the upcoming season?
Thats all I can think of right now.
Cheers
1. Jasper
Don’t think there is anyone here going to Jasper but I could probably find a few contacts who did last season on Facebook if you really need to ask some questions (There was a ton of people in the Vancouver hostel going to Marmot Basin (Jasper)). Samesun Vancouver is packed with snow people at the end of October.
2. Buying gear
Vancouver isn’t any cheaper than on the mountains unfortunately… Depending how you are getting to Jasper you could stop off in some of the smaller towns and find a bargain or go to the snowboard part of Vancouver and find a deal. The other option is to hire a car for a day and drive to the outlet stores in Seattle (and get your fingerprinting done for the states out of the way nice and early) Remember you need a visa to enter the states but it lasts for a year or 2 and is only like $20.
3. Phone
Bring your own phone for the plan otherwise you end up in a contract. One of these is a great deal for the price and it stood up to my season in Canada and is still going now (almost a year old) with no issues and never formatted - http://www.google.com.au/nexus/5/
4. Phone Plans
Stick with the major 3 brands (Telus / Bell / Rogers) as they give the best reception and in the mountains you need to stick with the best. A quick google search says Telus has 4g in the mountains at Marmot so that might be a good option. Remember that phones in Canada are freaking expensive if you want data… I was paying about $80 a month for 3gb data but it was worth it since I used my phone a lot while being stuck at top huts of lifts… (even though you aren’t supposed to lol)
Hope this helps
Hey mate,
Thanks for the info, we might drive down to Seattle and go shopping. Always wanted to visit Seattle anyway. Having to lug our gear from Vancouver to Jasper is going to be a pain I think
