FYVE X BOARDWORLD Graphic Design Contest 2014
Hey,
My name is Lauren Bortoli, from my own little design initiative BORT DESIGN. I’m currently working as a graphic designer in the print industry - looking to move into more creative and illustrative work.
Anywho - this is my female design. Personally, I have just started snowboarding myself, and have found that many of the female boards are much of a muchness. Well, what if I don’t want a board with a sexy chick on it, or a fancy, swirly font saying ‘LOVE’? Sometimes the male boards are more our style, but often we cannot get them in the sizing we need. I conducted a short round of questioning to my fellow female shredders - and they agree!
I took the idea of the bunny, also often misunderstood for a cute, fluffy and docile creature and gave it some gnarl. We’re on the slope to be hardcore and we want a board to reflect it. I’ve even adapted this design into a skateboard and shirts on my instagram!

She’s called The Wedge.
I have loads of female friends that are good riders and complain all the time that the breadth of design options for ladies and snow sports equipment is annoyingly narrow. They are sick of overtly ‘girly’ graphics on boards and they want something that looks good but will stand out as a woman’s board without being covered in flowers, fluffy kittens, lips and/or swirly things. They want something strong, fun and female-centric, without being vacuous and predictable.
I chose something iconic and recognisable, with bright, fresh colours that pop. That orange on the base will create that sought-after UV glow on the board on that bluebird day.
I’ve tried to keep the design on the base pretty simple to keep the durability up and the ride faster. Nothing worse than the Ptex popping out of your favourite board after one to many butters.

Hey guys! Please find attached my female board submission!
My board design is called ‘Neon Paradise,’ based on 80’s radness and awesomeness, neon colours and flamingos… Because. Let’s be honest. Who doesn’t love a good 80’s pink flamingo?!! I love mis-matched patterns and bright clashing colours. Plus I think the old school words (i.e. Rad, Tubular, Dude…) are just the best. Ultimately I wanted a board that made people smile. Just imagine riding her through the powder, making everyone jealous with her neon, ridiculously bright and hilarious hues…!!

The original femme fatale. Hand drawn, the design embodies the feel of vintage sailor tattoos. The focus of the design is to create a strong female look that is modern, unique and a fitting accomplice to any deadly lady.
