I was going to +1 Trent and ozgirls opinions, but then I thought about it a bit more.

If I got to do that in year 11 and then I had to repeat yr 11 and then do yr 12, I would hate having to go back to school after that…all I could think about would be snow and what I was missing out on and why was it ok for me to ditch school last year but not this year?

I think said teenager will have plenty of opportunities for gigs like that in the future. I would be saying ‘Get school done first and then you can spend the rest of your life chasing similar opportunities if you like!’
Mostly for their own good because I can imagine myself just not giving a tinker’s cuss about school after I’d had that much fun!

I agree with cords.

Better opportunities will always come up. It’s not like he won’t be able to work at the snow after school if he wants to. And he’ll be able to do it in ever more exotic locations haha.

You get one opportunity to finish school. Rather finish now and enjoy the adventures a year later. There will be no shortage of opportunities.

100% spot on there….... Most of the best opportunities that I have come across have been about who I know rather than what.

So if Azz or me wanted to go to Uni we have to go to TAFE to do our HSC. It doesn’t’ matter that this rule came in well after the fact.

A lot of TAFE certificate level courses have no pre-requisites, and they can lead into diplomas, which give you credit towards degrees. It might not be the quickest way to get to where you want to be, but it’s an alternative.

More to the point though, if I was in Y11, and had the same opportunity come up I’d definitely take it, and possibly consider the path above; depending on what your kid wants to do later in life. It’s never too late to go back to school. I left my job in IT at the start of this year and went back to Uni.

Interesting… I have made enquiries about attend a couple of uni’s and they all say the same thing.

Do you HSC (at TAFE) and then apply.

I believe the only credit you get is time off your degree if relevant. I don’t believe TAFE degrees actually allow you to go to Uni anymore if you haven’t completed your HSC.

I found this out and investigated when a friend of a friend went to TAFE to do her HSC. Thought she was bonkers and then because I always had teaching in the back of my mind I found out more info.

You get one opportunity to finish school.

Anyone at any age can decide to “finish” school.

the HSC is available at TAFE for anyone and you can do it in your own time.

Shortest amount of time is 1 year (to do yr 11 & 12)

Yeah, I get that. My point was more… finish while it’s easier, i.e., with friends, while school seems like what he should be doing at this age. Putting it off will only make it harder and less likely it will actually be finished. You have the rest of your life to chase adventures…

It’s a done deal, just met with his co ordinator, school is cool with it.
Will organise work to go to and fro via email.

Only one kid left at Chill Hill as of Sunday and she only shows up half the time anyway.

School is such a small part of life. Get it out of the way first, then life really begins. He will get better opportunities and be able to enjoy them better when he is 18+

Well, it’s happening… And it’s only till the end of season. 7 weeks. That’s only 35 days of school, less a couple of student free days….. I’d say just over 30 actual days. Worst outcome seems to be that he might have to do one subject again. It also sets him up to do the season at the school up there next year as planned. In my view, which is probably different to a lot of peoples’ carpe diem!
