This conflict goes far beyond religion, although I think it’s very easy to dismiss it as a religious conflict. Only one side attacks because of the differing religious belief you mention. Israel is trying to defend its people—nothing more. Israel is home to both Jews and Arabs, and those living within its borders’ do so in peace. This is about the basic human right to live in peace, to not be attacked by terrorists, and ultimately survive. They are fighting terrorists who want their country completely destroyed. I know it’s hard to comprehend when we are fortunate enough to live in a peaceful democracy. But unfortunately that is not the case everywhere. There is a difference between right and wrong, and in my opinion only one side understands this.
But it’s clearly done all in the name of religion, and claims for “Holy” land!!!!!
It’s definitely not a unique situation as you can pretty much put down most conflicts to differing beliefs, and mainly due to religion!!!!!
To a very mild extent (by comparison) it even happens here!!!!!
It just bewilders me that people that follow the doctrines of peace and love for fellow human beings, are the main perpetrators of terrible atrocities!!!!!

Carving out a tract of land in a piece of earth that has been fought over since man first created weapons and giving it to a “people” who hadnt really been there for some time and expecting it not to result in the bloody shitfight that it has been was really naive, to make an enormous understatement.
This is a hugely complex topic, and not one I want to debate on a public forum. I was giving my opinion, and like me, you’re entitled to yours. I’ll leave it at that. Religion and politics aside, ultimately what we all want to see is peace, and I hope we see it in our lifetime.

Good call mate, religion and politics can be a mine field even among the best of mates. Either side of the fence feel so passionately towards it which unfortunately leads to people doing incomprehensible things.

Jews have been in the land for thousands of years. The first Jewish temple was built in 957BC in Jerusalem and the second temple was built in 835BC—of which the Western Wall is still standing. There has never been a non-Jewish state in the land. This is fact. If you’re going to look up the history, go back further than 100 years.
When Israel became a state in 1948 (the third Jewish state in the land), every single Arab neighbour rejected its existence and attacked. Israel pushed them back and claimed more land for its own protection. When lasting peace treaties were struck with its neighbours, it handed land back. Israel has time and time again been willing to trade land for peace, as it did in 2005.
cords, the fundamental problem is Hamas doesn’t accept Israel’s right to existence. They will not stop until Israel is no more. They don’t want peace, they don’t want to negotiate. They want Israel and Jews wiped off the face of the earth. So unless you’re saying Israel shouldn’t exist at all (the ONLY Jewish state in the world and the ONLY democracy in the Middle East), then it’s really a black and white issue. You either give in to terrorists and cease to exist, or you fight for your right to exist and live in peace.
What is your solution exactly?
I’m not pretending to have any solution, except that I wish that the separation of religion and state was how it was everywhere….I’m just asking genuine questions so I can learn more about it.
Palestine doesn’t seem to realistically have the resources to make Israel cease to exist, even if that may be the aim of those currently in power. Israel definitely seems to have the resources to make palestine cease to exist and it seems like they could do it tomorrow if they wanted to…but it also seems like they would then risk the wrath of neighbouring Arab states, so they don’t do that, but they just seem to sort of do it sneakily by trying to settle jews in palestinian territory.
From what I have read, arabs live in Israeli territory in ‘peace’ but are treated as 2nd class citizens. I’m not sure if it was me that I would be happy to accept that. Israel may be a democracy but I struggle with how that fits in with being a country that is defined by its attachment to a religion.
I don’t know anything about the land swap deals but have heard that of the ceasefire deals that have been brokered, more of them have been ended by Israel than by palestine.
I am also going on my basic knowledge of Jewish history from the bible and with the idea in the back of my mind that Jews believe that they were God’s chosen people and that part of the contested area is the land promised to them by God, so they believe (as you mentioned prior to the last hundred years) that it is almost a divine right and that they must continue to fight off the ‘philistines’ to claim back what is rightfully theirs, given to them by God.
Call me crazy, but I’m not sure the right way to cease conflict is by shootin rockets into the people that you are seekin peace from?????

Israel is the only country where its Arab citizens aren’t treated like 2nd class citizens. Some of them even hold seats in the Knesset (parliament). In all neighbouring Arab countries, the Palestinian refugees are treated as refugees; they have no rights at all, not even able to go to school!
They might not have the resources to make Israel cease to exist, but they certainly have the resources (sponsored by other terrorist regimes) to fire thousands of rockets into civilian territory, and waves of suicide bombers into shopping malls, cafes, and buses. Not only that, but they are oppressing their own people!
Hamas has broken every ceasefire agreement that Israel has offered, including to send aid into Gaza. The only thing Israel has ever asked to strike peace agreements is for all terrorist activities to stop; rocket fire and suicide bombers. How can you deal with them, offer them land, offer them peace… if they won’t stop attacking your country?
You would think it makes sense to stop attacking Israel, to try to agree to peace, and both live in harmony. This is what Israel has always wanted. It’s impossible to broker when only one side wants peace. You can’t just sit there in bomb shelters and tolerate this sort of aggression, even if you have the military might to do so. Imagine if it was another country… what would happen?
I also try to keep religion out of it. I think any conflicts based on religion are ridiculous. That said, there are 22 Arab nations in the world. There is only one Jewish state. But again, Israel isn’t basing it’s military strategy on religion. The state of Israel was formed LEGALLY by the UN in 1948. Since then they have done everything to live in peace with its neighbours, and it has been a struggle ever since.
Food for thought… many in the Arab world support Israel in this conflict and believe Hamas needs to be defeated for the Palestinian people to live the life they deserve—in peaceful existence with Israel. The vast majority of Israelis and Jewish people around the world want the Palestinian people to have their own state. Israel wants peace and always has.
