Whistler 14/15

Avatar

Hi all

I’m very new to this board. I came across it on google whilst researching Whistler.

I’m a complete beginner at snowboarding, but it’s always been something i’d like to do. I just never really has the chance until now. I’m heading to Whistler this winter to work a season using the Bunac Full Placement scheme. Due to my lack of experience I figured that’s the best way to get a job quickly. It’s supposed to be a guaranteed job at the Four Seasons. I know it’s not likely to be the greatest job, but i’m heading there for the snowboarding and social side of. Does anyone have any experience working at the Four Seasons?

Basically, i’m just posting here to ask if there’s anything I can do to prepare for the winter season? There’s not much here in England for snowboarding. I’m hoping to get to a dry slope for for a couple of days so I have some practise before I leave.

Is it worth getting any specific clothes/equipment before I leave or should I just get that all when i’m over there? I’m heading over by myself and I don’t really know anyone that’s done anything like this before.

I’d also be up for meeting any members over there for some beers if anyone is up for it?

Welcome to Boardworld, PosiJohn. shaka

When do you arrive in Whistler? You’re from England so I’m sure you’ve got enough warm clothes to get you through the first few days in Canada. It makes sense to purchase what you need in Whistler, as you’ll have a much better selection, probably better prices (I’m not sure about prices in the UK but I assume it’s more), and you won’t have to carry it all over. Just take some warm clothes (jacket, beanie etc.) so you’re not freezing over there.

The best thing to do is maintain fitness and flexibility. I’ve been doing yoga, swimming, riding a bike etc. Anything that helps with core and leg strength is good, as you’ll need that strength for snowboarding, and stretching is probably the most important pre-season preparation you can do (at least for me it is). Snowboarding is pretty full on, so if you can prepare your body pre-season, you’ll be better off when you hit the mountain.

I’ll be there all season, mate. As will many other members. We are always happy to catch up and show you around. Let me know when you’re arriving.

Wow, that would be a great challenge for you! Oh well, you should now prepare your self for the cold winter experience, make sure you had the right set of clothes to warm you up. You should also start body workouts and eat healthy foods so your body could stay away from any flu and colds. Good luck, I know you can do it!  wink2

Welcome!

You will be fine in the care of BUNAC/IEP. I went with them a long time ago (to the US)

This is also a great read!

Thanks for the advice everyone!

I’m planning on getting to Whistler in the middle of November. I’m heading to New York on the 4th for a few days, then to LA for for a few days, then to Whistler. Bunac seem to think the job will start in December, but if it turns out i need to be there earlier that’s not a problem. I think I might book a week or two at the HI Hostel in Whistler in case I don’t start work or get my staff housing until December. It looks like all the affordable accommodation goes very quickly!

As for the exercise and mobility, i’m really in to Crossfit. I think that should be good preparation as there’s lots of leg/core/cardio/mobility workouts. Plus, I plan on continuing it at Crossfit Whistler while i’m there, although that might not happen when I realise how long it takes to get to creekside from the village.

When I know my arrival date, i’ll be sure to let people know on here. Whistler seems like a community of really great people and I can’t wait to get started!

Sounds good, mate. I’ll definitely be there in November. Stick around on the forums and get in touch with me before you arrive. More than happy to catch up (and I can help you with your shopping haha). We’ll probably have a Boardworld start of the season dinner/drinks with all our members over there. It’s a great way to meet people and put faces to names.

That sounds awesome, cheers! I could definitely use some help with the shopping and it’ll be great to meet people that are there for the season.

I just bought my flight to New York for November 6. I think i’ll end up getting to Whistler around the 18th.

I’ll stick around here, this place looks great! Thanks again for all the help.

Bit of an Update.

Originally I was told by staff at Bunac that if I was unsuccessful applying for one job in Whistler, they would put me forward for another few jobs. I was led to believe that even if I didn’t get the position I wanted, I would have got a job there doing something else. I didn’t think that was too bad, so I went with them. I found out yesterday that I only have one chance to get a job in Whistler on their full placement scheme. If Unsuccessful I can swap to Blue Mountain in Ontario(not interested) or drop to the self placement scheme.

So it now looks like my chances of heading to Whistler for the upcoming season depend solely on one interview. Had I known this in the beginning I wouldn’t have bothered booking with Bunac and would have just gone to Whistler for the Job fairs in October. As i’ve already bought my flights/told my employer when i’m leaving etc I can’t do that.

Hopefully things will work out for the best and i’ll be seeing some of you guys in Whistler. I won’t know for certain until September though.

Hi!

I came across your post on this forum and you’re the only person I have fount on any forum so far going through the same process as me!!

I have my interview next month for Four Seasons on full placement but I am slightly annoyed as they are the only employer Bunac seem to have lined up interviews for?! Like you I’m not interested in Ontario or anywhere else. Do you know what position you are going for?

Hey, sorry for the slow reply, i’ve been away for awhile.

I’m the same, had I known this was going to be the case I wouldn’t have bothered with them. I haven’t fully decided yet, but I think i’m going to try for the Ski Concierge or Front Desk Agent job. I really don’t want to do Bar or Restaurant work. What about you?

I know they’ve not been very helpful!

I think I’m gonna go for front desk/housekeeping I have my interview next month, do you?
I’m slightly worried as I’ll be arriving in October 2 months before the jobs start so not sure where I’ll be staying

I have my interview on Thursday 21st August.

I’m not getting to Canada until about the 15th November, i’m going to spend two weeks in America first. I’d imagine if you get the job, Four Seasons won’t sort accommodation out until mid November at the earliest. May have to find a hostel or something?

Any ideas what you’ll do if you don’t get the job?

Oh yours is the day before mine!

Yeah I’ve thought about staying in Vancouver for a couple of months first before I head up to Whistler. Just trying to find somewhere to stay.

I don’t have a clue what I’m gonna do if I don’t get the job, I’ll be even angrier with Bunac that’s for sure!!
