You’ll have to be the first person ever to claim that a burton fish sinks!

Haha, that’s what I was gonna say.

One problem I find with short boards a la 420 in pow is, while they float great in untracked conditions, once you get on a run with a few tracks on it, the performance goes down sharply. When you go from float then cross a track the board dips but then doesn’t have enough nose clearance to re-enter the knee deep on the other side of the track. It’s basically a sharp dip & you really have to be on your toes not to sink the nose. It sucks in the afternoon when you’re tired.

If you go short, I think you need to be able to give yourself as much nose as possible

I disagree with this from personal experience. Last year i rode a burton nug in japan and never had the track crossing issue at all. the only way it could be an issue is if your going slow. Keep your speed up and your board doesnt have time to dip.

The only complaint i had with the short boardness was keeping up speed on a super 50+cm of fresh day due to me being nearly 100kgs at the time. A fresh wax kinda took care of that issue on the next day.

Okay, I’ll grant that it’s condition-dependent - if it’s not that deep and if it’s just one track you’re crossing

Yes I would have to disagree with the nose dive thing as well I had no issue with the 148 this year going from deep to piste and back, I was very skeptical when I first took the 420 out that it would not float and definitely nose dive but it didn’t even come close ever I never went over the handle bars, I still can’t believe how good it goes. I am keeping the Giant Mantaray and Big Fish for my second boards. The Burton Fish was okay the issue was getting the speed to lay large lines I am too heavy for it as the waist and length is for a lighter rider. I have been riding Burton since 84 and still do in Australia as the product has incredible durability and it works. I used a Burton Spliff Spitboard in Guthega Backcountry last season and it was a similar ride to the Fish and have sold it as I thought it would go as well as my Burton Nug 150, must be the weight thing again.

Just had a thought - you’re not talking about the fishcuit are you?

No definitely not, I had a 2008 Green Fish 160 it wasn’t a bad board it was just not that much better than my old 164 Burton Baron ES. The next year I rode a O’sin 4807 168 Swallow in Japan and it was a revaluation, I then got the Gentem 160 Giant Mantaray 3 years ago and that was better, and just picked up the Gentem Bigfish for next year a month ago to go with my new 420 152cm.
By the way how do you put photos up as the image button does not seem to work for me.

Hey Nigel,

To put up photos, first they must be uploaded somewhere on the internet. This is a good site to use: http://postimage.org/ (no registration and it’s quick).

From there, copy the “Direct Link” to the clipboard.

Paste the link. Highlight the link. Then hit the IMAGE button. Done.

Or if you already have the image uploaded somewhere; right click the image and select “copy image URL” or similar (depending on browser). Then paste the link, highlight, hit the image button.

Basically you just need to get the URL of the actual image and put it between the [img] tags. Let me know if you have any issues and I can walk you through it.

Hit the QUOTE button to see how I added the image below.

My new Gentemstick Big Fish 163 super wide waist 287, not as much as my YES 420 however should be a good two board quiver for Japan next season.
