Ok I know this a bit of a random question but…..
A mate of mine has offered to take me with him on a Snowboarding trip to Gulmarg in Kashmir:
http://www.powderhounds.com/Other/India/Gulmarg.aspx
I realise this is a fairly random/alternate type destination but on an adventure/excitement/culture level its kind of off the scale (only slight understatement). I’m all about collecting life experiences so this is kind of down my alley. There are various considerations to this type of destination not the least of which would be avalanches, people fighting with real guns, isolation regarding safety and medical aid etc etc.
I’m just wondering if anyone has actually been there or thought about going.
Here’s part of how Powderhounds describes it:
“How about a journey to a place that combines big mountain skiing, powder, backcountry, avalanches, men with guns, poverty, filth, driving chaos, random acts, culture, hawkers, Russians, beggars, colonialism, Ukrainians, monkeys, and culinary mysteries all into one?! Gulmarg Resort in Kashmir (the Indian part of Kashmir at this point in time!) is this place. One visit to Gulmarg India WILL give you stories that will be retold for the rest of your life without the need for embellishment. “
I gotta be honest and say that to me that sounds almost irresistible…..
Anyway, any experiences with this sort of destination would be appreciated!!
Sounds like Western Sydney without the snow?????
That good huh??
I read a snowboard mag trip report about it years ago (Was an aussie mag), maybe try locate that article and give it a read.
a mate of mine runs snow tours through Di5 adventures to there aswell. His pics look awesome!!! Although i dont think i could cheat on japow for my yearly overseas snow jaunt.
Well we were planning on going back to Japow ourselves but then started thinking…. why don’t we go full adventure and kind of outside the box….
All the write ups and pics look amazing plus with the added bonus of boarding the Himalayas and taking in some new ancient culture.
If anyone is keen on joining us I’m happy to share dates once we work them out. (My mate is a rural specialist doctor too which is always nice to travel with…. lol!)
Pretty sure there was a member on here that went a couple years ago!!!!!
Even posted up an edit!!!!!
Maybe a search or two will find it?????
oh ok cool! I’ll have a look, thanks Mizu!
Go if you can!
Its a place that’s only going to get more popular, will probably never be as popular as Japan, but at the moment its still pretty raw and worth going for the experience along with the snow.
The snow isn’t as consistant in my opinion, but when it comes you get a lot and it usually lasts for days due to the lack of people.
Cool thanks guys
Here you go…
Is this your friend trent?
yep thats him
this sounds super interesting.
that powder hounds description really makes me want to go there but not without preparing a will first.
