~ TRAVEL INSURANCE - Who to deal with, and who not to ~

I think this means that if you were competing or earn $$ whilst snowboarding you aren’t covered,

so make sure if you’re hustlin’ while boarding keep it on the down low wink

What company would you recommend for snow insurance that covers guided backcountry/off piste in Japan?

Did anybody confirm if ammi covered this?

They did when I checked last year. Worth having a look through the PDS in case anything has changed.

Just bumping this after doing some hunting around for my 2 upcoming trips. For both of them I would like off piste snow coverage and decent rental car excess coverage (AAMI who I usually use for snow trips has a weird line in their PDS regarding rental car coverage).

It looks like Allianz has come up trumps for me. I emailed them to confirm off piste was fine (there was no mention of it as an exclusing in the PDS which is generally a good sign) and I received this reply.

Allianz travel insurance will certainly cover you while snowboarding (and snow sports) as long as undertaken for leisure purposes and on designated snow fields.

When I quizzed them on “designated snow fields” and specially asked about off piste. I got this reply.

As long as you are at a snow resort and follow all precautions and advise, you will be covered away from the groomed runs.

I guess “snow resort” is open for interpretation but definitely an affordable insurance for people to consider if you don’t want to be limited to groomers.

Hmmmm to me that sounds like it covers side country at best!

Yeah that’s the way I kind of interpreted it. It’s weird in all the PDS’s I’ve looked at it’s generally black and white “No off piste at all” or “Anything but professionals is a goer”

The Allianz PDS doesn’t actually mention any sort of restrictions/exclusions in regards to resort boundaries so if you were to go by that it’s actually a very reasonable policy (similar to AAMI where they also don’t exclude)

It’s only after contacting Allianz that this “Snow resort” criteria entered the mix. As it’s not mentioned in their PDS though I’m not sure how they could regulate/fight it??

These are the only excluded activities in the PDS (snow sports don’t even get a mention!)

Sports and Leisure
27 Your claim arises because you hunt, race (other than
on foot), engage in Open Water Sailing, play polo, go
mountaineering or rock climbing using ropes or climbing
equipment (other than for hiking) or from professional
sport of any kind, or from parachuting or hang gliding.
28 Your claim arises because you dive underwater using an
artificial breathing apparatus, unless you hold an open
water diving licence issued in Australia or you were diving
under licensed instruction.
29 Your claim arises from travel in any air supported device
other than as a passenger in a fully licensed aircraft
operated by an airline or charter company. This exclusion
does not apply to regulated or licensed ballooning.

Yeh they keep it as ambiguous as possible thats for sure!

I’m going to need a decent policy for the relocation to Whis, so going to do a hell of a lot of research soon. Or just let you do the research and go with what you get haha

Ok was ready to book my travel insurance and decided to call Allianz to confirm the ruling with them. After making my way through a few operators I ended up with a “You’ll be covered if you are riding within your ability” ok that’s vague…. so then I spelt the whole off piste thing out to them and got a “oh no you’ll only be covered on the designated ski runs” to which I confirmed only meant groomers.

Ahh well back to the drawing board.

If a run is a Gladed run, does it count? Technically the tree runs here are still runs lol

Pretty sure Off Piste generally means any un groomed or marked trails, so if it’s a marked run that’s on a trail map, then ya probably fine!!!!!

I reckon if there’s also no ropes/signs/markers that you’ve ducked, then ya pretty sweet!!!!!

does Australia not have a reciprocal health care agreement with Canada and/or New Zealand?

With New Zealand, but I don’t think so with Canada!!!!!

And these reciprocal agreements don’t cover all scenarios and costs!!!!!

Proper insurance is the only way to be covered!!!!!
