From my understanding its not like Canada mate.

You need to find a business that wants to employ you and they need to fill out forms to give to the government.

From the US government website;

“To work legally in the U.S., non-residents must first locate an employer or sponsor who files a petition (Form I-129) with USCIS in the U.S. The petition must be approved before a visa application can be considered. All applicants attending an interview for a nonimmigrant petition-based visa (H, L, O, P and Q visas) must present the receipt number of an approved I-129 or I-797 petition. These petitions are now electronically verified. Applicants should expect a minimum period of 2-3 business days for petitions to be verified before a visa can be issued.”

Are you currently a student or recently finished (within the last 12 months) some post high school study?

If so, you can apply for a J1 visa, however you still need sponsorship.

But are you planning to travel around or stay in one spot for the season?

(You are road tripping around then up to Whistler yeh?)

The sponsorship only works if you plan to stay in one spot and work for the same company for the length of your stay/visa. If you leave the job i believe your visa is cancelled.

Not with the Grow USA student one. I have a friend who got the sponsorship and didn’t end up working a single day over there. He travelled around the whole time coast to coast.

Also, unfortunately TAFE isn’t an accredited post-secondary institution in this case.

“Students attending a vocational school are not eligible to participate in the Student Work and Travel Program unless they can demonstrate that their study will ultimately lead to a degree from an accredited post-secondary institution.”

There’s some good info on their site.

I also know that you can get the visa without having any job lined up at all. You can go over there first and then source your own job. The entire process is a lot harder if you don’t qualify as a student though.

Hey thanks for the info walker, ive been talking to a my mate and i think im just going to use the 90 Visa waiver program, atleast to start with like you said.

As for the statement about TAFE thats actually incorrect and i already knew that from other sites but here’s the piece from that website,

If you are attending a vocational college (e.g. TAFE), you may need to demonstrate that your study will eventually lead to a Degree (we can guide you on this)

My course leads into a multitude of different degrees and my qualification that i will have going over to the US is on the skills shortage list, so i doubt I would have any real dramas in that area
