So I guess I’ll be in Whistler in January 2015!

Booked in 10 nights at Summit Lodge & Spa Whistler yesterday having done pretty much zero research on the actual village hopefully it’s an ok choice (I have up until to next December to cancel so no huge risk)

Lift ticket wise are there any deals I should be keeping an eye out for or is it just a general 9 of 10 day ticket from the ticket office?

Awesome!!!!!

As far as location goes, it’s down at the other end of the Village, but I’ve stayed at a place that was a stones throw away from there, and the walk through the village each mornin is actually a great way to warm up the sore muscles!!!!!

It’s a great spot for some of the best eats, along with the better of the two Supermarkets, plus a few other shops that are down in the Square!!!!!

Plus ya got the Museum, Library (internet access), and the Olymipic Park with an Ice Skate Rink!!!!!

Along with that, it’s heaps quieter than the top end of the village, which is a definite plus!!!!!

I’m pretty sure they don’t have any deals in regards to lift tickets, but if ya know an employee of the resort, I think they can get a discount for ya!!!!! * I could’ve dreamt this, so don’t hold me to it!!!!! LOL

Awesome!!!!!

Oh that’s great news lots of the things you’ve listed sound up my alley. I ended up booking this place as it had good TA reviews and it was fully self contained with a bathroom/kitchen etc (means I can at least have a healthy breakfast and splurge on dinner)  For ~$150/night for a private single it seemed like a pretty decent deal as well and will be nice after 8 nights of “slumming” it in NYC.

Cheers, was planning on taking my own gear (although lugging it around the USA could be fun) haven’t even got to the stage of looking at what flights both international and domestic will allow.

Thats great news that you’re coming to Whistler, thats a great location as mentioned before by Mizu. Underground tuning shop is located there and you can organise Yes/Dupraz/Now demos there. Maybe even see if you could sort out a rental there aswell. From memory they do 1st day free for the demo’s then I believe it’s $25 a day after that but it may be worth asking for a discount for longer term rentals/demos.

For lift passes I should be able to sort you out with a Family and Friends pass. Ends up being a bit cheaper than the advertised price but not by a whole lot. Your other alternative is booking online in advance which may be cheaper. I believe this is what oz did before she came over and it worked out about the same as the staff Family and Friends discount.

Hey Kyle good to see you back, thought I’d spotted you around but wasn’t sure. Nice edit, roundhouse roll is always a winner first thing in the morning. Should try and meet up for a ride one day, I’m off Mon-Wed again this season so hit me up if you’re keen to shred.

As Kyle mentioned previously the snow came back after a bit of a hiatus and dumped on us for the past week with well over a metre falling in total. As an added bonus the freezing level stayed down and it snowed all the way down to the village the whole time. I’d just about given up hope on the trees down low being unridable this season but thankfully that wasn’t the case. All zones are pretty much ready to go, even if it’s a little thin in some places it’s still a massive improvement on where we were beforehand.

I’ll apologise in advance as I haven’t been taking the go-pro up like Kyle but I’ve got an idea for an edit which I’ll try and get done with the next storm to come through.

It’s great to finally start seeing Whistler really looking like it usually does with snow all the way down to the village. Over the past week we’ve seen a week long storm with fresh snow every morning and the alpine lifts being either on standby or closed due to the winds. As expected with all this snow we’ve had patrol performing avalanche control with bombs almost every morning. Even with all the bombing the alpine has been open remarkably early which has been fantastic as with the lifts open earlier we’re not only getting more time to ride but more time to have people packing down the snow which is great for the base as it’s compacting well and reducing our chances of having an unstable base. With the high winds it’s made for some great stashes of deep snow out there.

Despite it being presidents week with a lot of tourists in town the line ups haven’t been as crazy as they have been in previous years with a lot of lift lines quietening down after midday. This was definitely the case on Monday and saw us doing a few front face laps before we got a little more adventurous and went into some zones off Peak that had been unridable previously. Managed to get some really good laps on Monday through Million Dollar Ridge which was brilliant, rode fresh the whole way down and couldn’t have been happier at the end. One friend even claimed that it was his best day riding so was stoked to be a part of it.

Tuesday saw snow falling all day with 29cm in 24hrs but with this snow came a lot of wind which kept the higher lifts on Whistler shut so we rode a lot of mid mountain early on. As much fun as it is riding up high it’s always refreshing to have a mid mountain powder day. Helps remind you of just how much good terrain is out there that gets overlooked otherwise. With a bit of traversing and hiking you can still get into some untouched areas which are usually accessible through the alpine lifts. One example of this is Goats Path which is a real favourite of mine but if you’re not familiar with the terrain it can be quite dangerous as there are cliffs in there.

Deep mid mountain snow made for some brilliant faceshots

Warning on Goats Path

Stopped at Dustys for a beer and came out after an hour to find my board covered in fresh snow.

Dumping in the village in the afternoon

The winds died down on Wednesday and saw the alpine open again on Whistler. Early on in the day it seemed like it wasn’t going to work out, I snapped my inner lace on one of my boots in the Fitz lineup 10mins before opening, then had a lens start fogging as soon as I got on the chair and Josh had a binding strap snap as soon as he strapped in his back foot. Despite these early mishaps we still managed to sort ourselves out and pushed on. I had limited time to ride as I was heading to Vancouver that afternoon but gambled on the alpine opening early and was rewarded with what I’d call one of my best laps ever through Million Dollar Ridge with Josh, Mark, Ty and his girlfriend Em.

Here’s a still off Mark’s GoPro from our lap down Million

As mentioned before I’m out of town for a week which I’m quite happy about as the body definitely needs some time to recover and its been quite some time since I’ve gotten out of town.  Hope everyones having a great time back in Whis and I’ll catch you all once I’m back at the end of the week.

Thanks mate that’s great to hear. I’d fully intended on bringing my board/gear with me but if you think the demo rentals are a good choice I may just consider going with that option depending on how I feel about lugging my gear around the USA with me.

Ok sweet I’ll keep an eye on lift tickets but it’s great to know you’d be able to help me out. Will need to decide how many days I intend to ride based on snow conditions and how many touristy things I want to do (definitely want to try to get to a NHL game).

Looking forward to it mate (your photos have me drooling) will keep you posted and organise a catch up when over there at this stage looking like the 7th-17th January.
