but im going to probably put my board bag in a locker in tokyo airport so ill take my clothes in carry on.

Do you mean for the period of time you are in Tokyo? as obviously you’ll need everything in Hokkaido.

If it turns out you might need the gear in your board bag in Tokyo but don’t want to lug it around it’s also really easy and cheap to Takkyubin black cat your luggage to where you’re staying and back.

Having said that you should be fine to get around with the bare basics in Tokyo. You generally get provided with all toiletries. Iv’e found picking up some cheap clothes when I’m there (uniqlo) tends to suit the climate better than any of my locally bought stuff. Just make sure you have some good quality shoes to walk in as you’ll cover some k’s.

Dad is stoked with the 12 Year Yamazaki and Hakushu Whisky I’ve brought back for him (apparently if you like whisky it’s some of the best in the world)

I must find this fine specimen and sample for myself!!!

Yeah mate if you like whisky at all it’s definitely worth a shot (sells for around $150 a bottle here) You can get it from any of the supermarkets but it’s usually the non aged stuff. To get the 12 year stuff just pop into one of the bottle shops and be blown away at the choice and how cheap everything is. Both of the ones I’ve mentioned are Suntory (really famous brand also the stuff Bill Murray was advertising in Lost in Translation)

Haha you can keep the CC I’d rather my pink/purple beast! Gee thanks set off more kim rage because you know you’ll be half way around the world soon enough! michelle

It does get fairly cold especially if there’s a breeze in town. You could take a snow jacket if it’s fairly tame looking or you’ll stand out like dogs balls (everyone else is in black business suits) You could pick up a lined windproof jacket from uniqlo for ~$50 and lined windproof pants for ~$20 if you want something that will suit the conditions/style.

Take gloves/beanie with you.

Whatever you go for make sure it’s easy to take on and off. The public transport/shops etc will have the heat set to 30+!

I had a thick warm jacket that I wore in Tokyo, and just wore a cap instead of a beanie, but I had to buy some gloves at a store cause I thought my hands were gonna drop off!!!!!

At night, it gets friggen freezin in Tokyo!!!!!

A pair of thermals under ya jeans will keep ya warm enough so that a jacket and tee is all ya need to wear on top!!!!!

* Just remember it can snow in Tokyo, so I’d have suitable gear to cope!!!!!

Like Dave said, all the locals just walk around in black, and mainly suits with maybe a scarf, no gloves!!!!! I felt like a wuss gettin some, but the wcf was worse than on the mountains!!!!!

You’re goin into Sapporo too yeah????? Wear warm gear in there too, plus some good boots with good grip or get some cleats/yaktrax!!!!!

Also as Dave said, spirits are so damn cheap in Japan, and so damn good as well!!!!!

They only Tax Beer in Japan, so that’s the dearest thing to drink!!!!! And even then, if the dollar is good, it’s still pretty good!!!!!

Hahah yep we’re both wusses in that case! LOL How about the young girls in short skirts with their socks pulled up. Cute sure but must be freezing!!

I’ve definitely felt colder in Tokyo at times than the mountains. Coldest I’ve been was probably jeans and thin bonds hoodie at the snow monkeys and the nozawa fire festival I started freezing from the soles of my feet (we were standing on ice for hours)

Good shoes are definitely a must I wear goretex trail style shoes and pack yaktrax which I haven’t needed yet. It’s unbelievable the amount of Aussies at the snow I’ve seen getting around the village in leather shoes which quickly get wet then freeze solid before they inevitably slip over and crack a tailbone.

Wow even talking about Japan again is starting to kill me. I’ve ignored it pretty well to this point but now just getting flashes of walking out of small izakayas/onsens in Myoko/Nozawa onto snow covered roads and getting covered in the lightest pow during a short walk home smelling all the amazing food and admiring the buildings/orange lanterns. It’s just a magical place.

I was talking to my parents the other day and we are both missing Tokyo/Kyoto and it’s food terribly!

There you go I didn’t know that! The beers a must though the big bottles of local beer add to the already amazing dining atmosphere. My favorite go to is still the Chuhi strong 8% 500ml cans from the convenience store for 201yen.

lol in that case I’ll point towards Tokyo, in a city of 13 million you’ll come across a couple! smile Something so simple yet so hot. Asian girls we’re never my thing…. Japan changed that! Going by the amount of tourists I heard pulling out the “Kawaii Desu” line they’d had a similar effect.

Now go read the rest there’s some good shit in there!  thumbsup

when you’re in Tokyo, you might want to pick up a new camera - they are probably cheaper than in Australia.
I’ve put a semi-guide in my Japan grabs thread.

Also, the site you want is
http://kakaku.com/camera/digital-slr-camera/

that’s for dslr and mirrorless

Nikon:
http://kakaku.com/camera/digital-slr-camera/itemlist.aspx?pdf_ma=58

Canon
http://kakaku.com/camera/digital-slr-camera/itemlist.aspx?pdf_ma=14

use that to get a feel for prices. Last time I went to Akihabara I found it expensive. Go into a camera store and show them the online cheaper price and sometimes they negotiate a little.

Actually, the best site for that is the japanese amazon.  http://www.amazon.co.jp
stores will recognize the amazon price but not the smaller places on kakaku.com which are cheaper.
Oh and many cameras have english menus, and you can download the english manual.
