New Board Help
Hey,
I am looking to buy my first board.
My experience is pretty minimal, I went last year to Perisher for 10 days, and am going to Niseko in the coming months for 10 days as well. I basically tried it out and am now looking to commit to it a bit more because I had a HEAP of fun. I was riding pretty comfortably after a couple of days and was starting tricks towards the end of the week.
I am after a board that will allow me to progress, but then not limit me after a few trips
After doing some research it sounds like a rocker will be better for me than camber. Im not going to be going fast enough to warrant the camber, but my technique is shitty enough to warrant a more forgiving catch free style rocker.
For stats I am about 170cm tall and 73kgish
Torp 7 have a massive sale on at the moment and I have highlighted a couple of boards that look like they may fit my profile, but it would be awesome to get some feedback!

I have been checking out boards outside the torp 7 sale as well and have come up with the following:

I wouldn’t worry about your weight and those boards you posted.
I weigh 80 and i ride a 154, and am looking to buy a 152 next.
Need to know your boot size more importantly.
Also mate, there are heaps of board suggestions in the below threads, go through that. Get any questions you might have on the boards mentioned then come back here and we will sort you out. If you want to save $$$ you can grab last seasons boards on sale which would be your best bet as you progress more you can upgrade later.

What is your concern with it being discontinued? Burton will still honour any warranty etc. From what i have heard its a decent enough board

I have got this board for a few mates (ranging from beginners to advanced) and they all love it, i pretty much have this board (diff model, but same specs etc.) and i love it. I would recommend you consider it;
don’t worry about the joystick being discontinued. It wasn’t discontinued because it was bad. It’s quite good actually.
I think the board sizes you listed are too short for Niseko. The rocker in the joystick would help with float and be out of the way when you’re on hardpack, so you can afford to size up. I’m the same weight as you, but taller, and the smallest joystick I would ride would be a 59 or 60 (whatever they make it in)

The Joystick is a GREAT board. I used to test all the Burton boards for STM (I did their ordering) and the Joystick was one of my favourite boards in the Burton line, and probably the best rockered board I’ve ever ridden. I actually went out and purchased one because it was that good. Don’t even think about not buying it because it’s discontinued; Burton discontinues boards all the time and it has nothing to do with the quality of the board. If the Joystick appeals to you, based on camber profile, shape, flex etc., then I would highly recommend it.
I’m going to give you some points to consider and I hope it doesn’t confuse you further. I think it’s important to understand all your options. If you have any questions, just let me know.
In regards to the weight ranges for each board, this is just a guide, nothing more. I think the 154 would be an ideal size for riding in Australia, but I tend to agree with MarcD about riding this size in Niseko. The powder is extremely light and deep, which could pose a slight problem. The board is full rocker, so that will allow you to float better, but you would still still pushing it, just a bit on the deeper days I think. I’m not saying it can’t be done though, and you can always set your stance back for even more float. I would be tempted to buy it, and if you get a really deep day in Niseko, set the stance back an inch or two. If you are still sinking, just hire a powder board for that day. I guess you need to weigh up just how much deep and light powder you will be riding during the lifetime of this board.
If this is really going to be the one and only board you ride for the next x years, just one board to handle everything from Australia to Niseko, you need to be smart about it and get something versatile, so you can handle all conditions. This means getting something a bit bigger than ideal for Australia and a bit smaller than ideal for Japan. I would probably step up to something around the 156 mark (and no bigger otherwise it will be too big for Australia—> not fun).

While this board isn’t full rocker, you still have rocker in the nose and tail, giving you the catch-free ride you’re after, while still providing good float in powder, and plenty of performance to enjoy as your progress over the years. I consider this board to be one of the best all-round boards on the market today. This board will handle it all. It’s worth a consideration.

Rider - To be honest, due to the sale on torp 7, the good reviews i have been reading all round of the joystick (including your own), I am likely to buy that board and sacrifice 2cm.
The Yes board you recommended sounds great, but i can buy a whole set up for the same price if i buy the joystick.
I am hoping that 2cm wont make that much of a diff, and I am going to try slim down to 70 before I head over too… (realistically I will be back to 73 from ramen by trips end 
)

You should be fine. You can’t have it all in one board, and you need to sacrifice something, somewhere. Overall, I think you will be stoked with the Joystick. It’s a super fun board to ride. Test it in the powder; if you need more float, set your stance back an inch or two. Either way, that thing will be awesome in Australia (it’s a killer park board). No issues with your boots size either. Let us know how it goes!
