Surfer killed by shark near Coffs Harbour

RIP downer

A teenage surfer died after he was attacked by a shark at Campbells Beach near Coffs Harbour, on the NSW north coast on Saturday.

The 18-year-old body boarder was surfing with friends about 100 metres off shore at Riecks Point when he was bitten on the legs by a shark. His friends managed to pull him to shore and started CPR.

‘‘He suffered a traumatic cardiac arrest as a result of his injuries,’’ a spokeswoman for the Ambulance Service said.

She said fellow surfers were trying to revive the man, believed to be from the north coast, when paramedics arrived but he could not be saved.

The beach was closed and water police were patrolling the area late on Saturday. Fisheries officers from the NSW Department of Primary Industries were also working with police.

The attack follows a fatal shark attack in Western Australia on November 23 and is the first fatal attack in NSW since 2008, when a 16-year-old body-boarder was killed by a shark at North Wall, near Ballina.

I don’t know about the truth of what I heard but there’s a story going around that where they were surfing was so full of fish that they were bumping into fish the whole time they were surfing.  If that was the case staying out in the water is supremely stupid, sharks that wander into that sort of thing will go into a feeding frenzy and bite anything.  Like I said though, not sure if that is true or not but regardless it’s a horrifying incident for all concerned especially for the poor kid and his family, RIP.

Would’ve been terrible for his mates to watch!!!!!

I agree that stayin in water with a shoal of fish is not the wisest thing to do!!!!!
