Few Aussie 13-year-olds can tell their friends they won’t be at school for the rest of the term simply because they’re heading overseas to embark on 4-month journey to the Winter Paralympics. But for Ben Tudhope that dream will tomorrow become a reality.
The youngster from Manly had the widest grin in the room at the official farewell of our 2014 Paralympic team at Andrew Boy Charlton Pool today. He certainly has plenty to smile about. Ben, his Mum and Aussie Paralympic Snowboard Team Coach Peter Higgins will fly out tomorrow to the first stop of Ben’s qualification journey in the Netherlands. If successful, the next stop will be Colorado, to make the most of the best early season snow in the world. After that, the team will then move on to Utah for further training before the games in Russia.

“Swaying in Sochi after a few tinnies just isn’t fair dinkum, according to the Australian Olympic Committee.Woe betide any Aussie athlete over-indulging on the complimentary vodka at the hospitality suites during next year’s Winter Olympics, with the Olympic Committee insisting that anybody seen “swaying or having rambling conversations” could end up on the next flight home.
Clarifying stringent new rules on behaviour, the AOC said drinking alcohol would be permitted outside the Olympic Village but left athletes in no doubt about their conduct, saying they could be kicked out if there is any repeat of the behaviour issues that plagued the Australian team at the London Olympics.
“Team members are permitted to consume alcohol responsibly,” a statement said, before listing a range of behaviour that would be frowned upon.
Here is the list that could see you packed off on the next plane back Down Under. Assuming you are part of the Aussie set-up of course.
1. Being disorderly or argumentative
2. Being bad tempered
3. Swaying
4. Falling down
5. Talking boisterously
6. Having rambling conversations
7. Annoying fellow team members
Any of these items could all result in possible disciplinary action, said the official guidlines.
No alcohol will be permitted in the Olympic Village or on the return flight to Australia following the Games.
Ian Chesterman, Australia’s Chef de Mission for the Sochi Olympics next February, welcomed the new guidelines.
“Our goal as a team is to go to Sochi, perform at our best and represent our country with distinction,” Chesterman said in a statement.
“The new rules relating to alcohol are designed to allow each athlete the environment to prepare and perform at their best. I fully expect our team will buy into this culture of excellence.”
Australia slumped to its lowest medal haul in 20 years at the London Games, sparking a fierce backlash from Australian media pundits who accused the team of wasting taxpayer money and being more focused on partying than success.
Members of Australia’s swim team were criticised for drunkenness in an independent review, and the Australians were also embarrassed by rower Josh Booth who was detained by police for damaging shop windows after a drinking session.
While athletes will be allowed to celebrate their performances with a beer or two, Australia’s Chef de Mission for Rio in 2016, Kitty Chiller, said “irresponsible” consumption of alcohol would not be tolerated.
“This is totally about respect for the Coat of Arms that we wear,” Chiller said in a statement.
“It’s about respect for the green and gold. It’s about respect for the Olympians of decades past and the great reputation they have built for us.
“It’s about respecting all the tradition and history and most of all it’s about respecting their fellow team members.”
“This is not a knee-jerk reaction to London. This is about moving forward with an even greater high performance environment designed for success,” she added.”

I was impressed he got any air sandboarding! If you’ve ever sandboarded on a snowboard you would know tindy is a perfectly reasonable grab.
Add that he is competing in riderX; tindy is a useful way to stabilize mid air.
Alex ain’t no fancy pants trickster, he’s a hardcore racer.

We were riding one sunny day in spring at Buller a few years back, and here’s Chumpy, waiting at the lift just to say hi. The snow was heaps fun, and there were seriously only 6 people there that day. And we got cheap tix through one of those coupon deals. That was my best day at Buller.

Fair call too, Dylan. 
ABC1 tonight, Australian Story about Annabel Blake, who is trying for SS as a skier at Sochi for our team. You will have heard of her mum, Janine Shepherd, who had a big crash (hit by a truck) while training on a bike.
I think it will be well worth a watch.

I found this article on the woman’s US SKi Jumping team (did you know that this is the first Olympics that women are allowed to compete?? Its the last of the male only sports) to be really fascinating, for numerous reasons!
