How’s this missus riding progressing? Is she getting out there?

Nah her days off so far haven’t been when the mountain has been open and when it has been open like today she has had extra job interviews or training or has come with me to the doctors.

Sarah’s super keen to do a lesson on Wednesday! Which will also be her first day on the hill..

First day back on snow in Whistler today. Had a fun day, just cruising and hitting side hits.

Aaron, I sort of heard about that today but didn’t know the details, just heard a sled was rolled but nothing more, pretty amazing welcome to the department I’ve got to say. glad to hear you’re doing ok and it wasn’t worse.

It’s been just about a week since opening and I can safely say I’m absolutely stoked to be back on a board again.

Went up opening day on saturday which was a blast, shot up by myself with intentions of catching up with certain people but before I knew it I’d bumped into others so just rode with them. From the get go it felt great, almost as though I hadn’t even stopped riding over summer. I’d say I’m almost feeling the most comfortable I’ve ever felt with my switch riding which is a great positive to start the season off.

It’s also been a pleasant surprise to see that there’s already tonnes of side hits already forming on the sides of runs, mores on red than emerald which I’m very happy to see as it has me thinking of another great hit run this year. Not too much in the way of ice out there aswell which is very nice for the lack of natural cover we’ve got. Theres still plenty out there but the snow guns have been going nuts with in excess of 65 million gallons of water being used by snowmaking so far. The plan is to have ride out to the gondola mid station open this weekend which will make for some longer runs which I’m really keen on getting into soon to get ready for those peak to valley laps that’ll come later on.

2nd day of the season I spent riding with Chantelle and Louise which was good fun having not ridden together in quite a while. really noticed the drop in temperature as the snow was significantly slower than the previous day but the low temps we’ve had since then have been great as the snowmaking hasn’t stopped all week and with the inversion due to come this weekend we should see even more snowmaking on the lower parts of the mountain.

Other than that I’ve finished off a work project yesterday that I was part of over the pays 11 weeks which was a great relief to finally have done. I was working for building maintenance refurbishing all the seats for Glacier Creek and Rendezvous, total of over 1600 chairs. Went back to work in Lift Ops today which was significantly better than I thought it would be, mainly because with the limited terrain open at the moment I get to see just about everyone who is on the mountain and in doing so I couldn’t get over how many people I know around town as every couple of minutes theres someone saying hi shaka Also got 2 laps in with Ty on my afternoon break which topped off a great day.

Still riding my old board from last season as it’s still pretty marginal in places but I’ve got new bindings and boots which I’m really enjoying. Picked up some of the restricted Burton Malavita’s with the winged highjacks which I’m absolutely stoked on as they’re making for some amazing butters and presses. Matched with a stiffer boot than I’ve ridden previously I’m really excited to see how the new board goes when I eventually bring out. as I’m feeling far more stable at speed than I have before not to mention more stable on landings so it looks like I’ve found a winning combo.

I’ll be riding Saturday through until Wednesday this week so I’ll try and get into the park, it’s just boxes and rails at the top of Emerald but some of the features look pretty fun.

And just to cap it off here are some random shots that I took at work the past week leading up to the opening and within the past week.

The ride to work over the past 2 weeks

Fresh dump of snow up at Glacier Creek

a solid 6” in the valley

Old vs New

To say I was excited on opening day was a massive understatement

@finney: What lift are you working at this year Finney?

I really hope they will not groom off the side hits.
