GoPro HD - does anyone use it for the snow season?

Avatar

How much does the 9k weigh? It has a lot of features crammed in if you get the GPS as well and it looks hefty.

We found it lightweight to work with. The Oregon 9K weighs 174g (including battery). Depends what you call bulky I suppose - i think you consider the GoPro bulky, this is more streamline, but that will be up to you to decide. For only $399 (delivered) and all the features, including backscreen, we’re very heppy with it. we showed it to some boarders there who ride halfpipe and they were way stoked with it.

I actuall got the Epic action wide HD. Cheaper than the gopro, it’s great when you wanna record or trials or tricks.

I just emailed Doc, I’m sure he’ll come on here soon. smile

Hi Cords,

We have taken all the cameras to the snow. Here is some footage for the ATC9K: http://vimeo.com/13557904
Some footage of the 2010 Tachyon XC Micro in the snow: http://vimeo.com/13616313
Epic HD: http://vimeo.com/13774413
The GoPro HD: http://vimeo.com/14166686
and the 9K in the water: http://vimeo.com/13954992

Hope this will give you some idea how the cameras performed in comparison. Let us know if you have any questions.

Cheers,

Petra

had a look at all of those. nice work.

do you render on the same settings for all the cameras footage?

Avatar

Cheers Crackers.
Yes, I do all the editing in the examples Petra has given with the same program on the same computer. I keep it very basic in that sense, That way you get a better comparison between cams - a ‘what you see is what you get’ sort of honesty. it would be no good doing all sorts of fiddles in the processing with a complex program, as what we assume is that the people who want to purchase these cameras will be processing on their computer at home. The idea is to show you what anyone can achieve with these cams. More video and editing/rendering skills and it just gets better from there.
Hope that helps!
Doc
PS we never disappear - just don’t want to seem like we’re hassling on the forum, cos it’s a chill place.
Thanks for the heads-up Jeremy, I only checked boardworld 2 days ago, so awesome to be notified of a question so we can get back as soon as possible.
If there is other content anyone would like, or questions, go for it smile

still leaning towards the gopro cos if its largeish wide angle lens. Any discounts for boardworld members?? wink

Avatar

Actually on closer inspection the epic does have a wide angled lens….168 degrees according to your website

and the gopro says Angle of View: 127ยบ wide angle in 1080p mode….but 170 deg in non HD mode

does the epic HD record in 168 degrees wide an angle in HD?

also…just in general size of the lens, how to the two compare? Its hard to tell from just looking at pictures. If you held the two cameras side-by-side, would they be similar sized lens or?

cheers.

Hi Cords,
I’ve just spoken to Petra and we’ll work out some sort of purchase bonus for boardworld members (on any other cameras if you request us and say you are from boardworld). It may not be direct cash off (as margins on the different cams vary and we already do free express post), it could be an SD card or something, but ask us direct and we’ll let you know smile

Now these cameras - GoProHD vs Epic - please note that the Epic only shoots vid in 120 degrees, photos are at the wider angle. the Gopro would lens is slightly larger.
If you’re looking for something to go up against the GoProHD, you could look at the Drift HD 170, which also has a small screen on it.
Info is here http://www.sportscamera.com.au/drift-innovation-hd170-p-390.html
We’ve only received these recently so don’t have any snow footage to show you, but we’re off on the dirtbikes for a big ride this weekend and will have some to bring back. Keep the q’s coming, we’ll keep the answers up (but we’ll be absent having fun til Monday)
Cheers,
Doc

Lots of new generation wearable cams have been released this year with new companies entering the market. The choice of which to buy can be difficult.

I wonder what the companies who have been leading this market are planning to maintain their share of sales. (VholdR, VIO, GoPro)

VIO haven’t updated the POV (except for firmware and price reduction) since it’s release 5 years ago. wink

Were as GoPro and VholdR have put out different models to fit different budgets, uses and sales pitches but with the new ‘players’ equaling their product I wonder what they will do next.

Cos this thread is starting to diversify, I’ve started a broader one for all these cams at:
https://www.boardworld.com.au/forums/viewthread/1189/

for the GoPro HD specifically though, just a heads-up that the new firmware update is out.
See http://www.goprocamera.com/support/hdheroupdate.php for all the info and upgrade link.
