New Zealand 2013 Wanaka/Queenstown

We booked Black sheep backbackers in Queenstown.. looks pretty good and has an outdoor hot tub. Booked YHA hostel in Wanaka which looks quite nice, though there’s no hot tub. So we’ll be in Queenstown 7-10 and wanaka 10-14 september in anyone wants to hang out!
So the first few days, is it worth going to coronet peak or the remarkebles or should we just drive straight to cardrona?

I have a real soft spot for the remarkables, just sayin LOL

My friend is gonna rent skis! Does it make sense to rent skis somewhere in Queenstown for the whole week, or is it best to rent in the resort we’re gonna ride in each particular day? We might take a day off the hill, however I suppose we’ll get a discount if he rents for 6 days. Plus, its probably best for him to have the same skis and boots throughout the week. Any ideas?

Gosh that’s a tricky question!

Yes it will be cheaper to rent for the whole week from the one place…. provided you are not going out of your way to return the equipment at the end of the week (ie are you flying our of Queenstown and therefore going back to Queenstown after Wanaka?)

But if a bit of extra coin spending is bearable then I advise renting at the two different locations…

If something goes wrong in Wanaka you can’t really ‘fix’ it easily (or cheaply) with the rentals you got from Queenstown.

But I suppose you have a few days to test the gear and fix any problems - change equipment if needed - in Queenstown…

Sorry not much help!

I think if you know your gear and enjoy what you have ridden on in Queenstown, then keep it for wanaka. As long as you are going back through Queenstown at the end of your trip.

Hey Henrik,

I’m in Queenstown at the mo, and given the conditions right now (Subject to change), my money would be on Cardrona as there ain’t much snow down low!!!!!

Also, ya mate would be better off hirin gear in Queenstown for the week as its only 5-10 mins away from the airport to drop the gear off before ya fly home!!!!!

If ya gonna ride the other resorts, I’d go Remarks & Coronet while you’re in Queenstown, and Cardrona & Treble when ya in Wanaka!!!!!

Ohhhh, and make sure ya bring ya camera cause this place is damn scenic!!!!!

If he only wants basic skis and not performance skis then I would recommend J&D Ski & Snowboard Hire:
J&D Ski & Snowboard Rentals

The old timer is a charmer and usually throws in an extra day or two free. I didn’t personally rent (have own gear) but my partner rented a board and her two friends rented skis and boards there and were happy with them for our week in Queenstown.

As previously mentioned, renting for the week from Queenstown is fine, assuming that you’re coming back to Queenstown to fly home so you can return them.

edit. Also, if he’s after performance stuff, the guys at R&R were pretty nice and helpful.

Did you get freshies? What’s with the lack of instagram pics? NZ should be ripe for envy inducing photos!
