Finney said this in regards to World Nomads though which turned me off it.

As for travel insurance - I’ve heard a few things along the lines that the medical centre here won’t accept world nomads anymore as they’re horrible with actually paying the bills back.

I can’t comment on that specific situation. I’ve had to make two claims with World Nomads over the years and never had a problem. One of the claims was for an injury. Granted I paid all the bills up front and World Nomads paid me on my return, no issues at all.

hey all, so after originally wanting to go with world nomads but then seeing finneys post “medical centre wont accept nomads etc. etc.” I decided to shoot them an email to ask and this was the result.

We, and most clinics in Whistler, do not accept any insurance policies. We ask the patient to pay up front and then give all the necessary paperwork to claim back the money your self with the insurance company. Sometimes they will accept it in the Emergency Department in Whistler (the Whistler Health Care Centre) but it depends on the circumstances. Some Insurance companies will provide credit card info up front before the appointment for a patient, but that must be worked out before hand to avoid delays…. I would check to see if the insurance provider you choose would do that.

I would definitely not choose World Nomads…. Anyone we have seen that uses that company seems to have a lot of issues with them. But that’s just my opinion! J Most others seem fine. AXA Assistance seems to be the easiest to deal with.

I’ve also used WN and made a claim and had no issues BUT recently I needed insurance, went to their website, and it appears you now have to pay an arm and a leg to include cover for snowboarding (it used to be included for no extra). Unless I misread the site, which is possible.

Maybe there is some confusion..

A medical centre don’t take insurance - you always have to pay up front (ie the Perisher Medical Centre… you have to pay upfront)

A hospital on the other hand takes your insurance details. actually they take nothing… they bill you later… or your insurance…

I have never had to pay anything when going to a hospital overseas (I actually have gone to emergency for something that required a normal Dr to avoid paying up front) but go to a medical centre/GP and yep pay up front.

Hostel is booked for Vancouver. Going to try to organise an overnight trip to Seattle for shopping I think. USA is tons cheaper than Canada and I shouldn’t really need anything until after the weekend anyway (I’ll have a minimal amount of clothes.)

Awesome thread, I wish i’d discovered it a few months ago when I was going through the hassles of applying for my visa.
I’m flying into Vancouver on Oct 27 and planning on heading up to Whistler for the November job fair. Fingers crossed there’s still some jobs available! Anyone know of any good hostels in Van?

Cheers smile

Welcome to Boardworld, Caity! shaka

You’ll have a great time in Whistler. I can’t help you re hostels in Vancouver. I’ve always just booked a cheap hotel through one of the discount hotel sites. You can usually get a decent room for under $100, but I’m assuming you don’t want to pay that much.

if you can join YHA here and use a HI hostel in vancouver / whistler, they’re about 30 dollars a night, cheap!!
