Thredbo 2013

with the heat wave thats rolling through at the moment, how do people think thredbo is going to fare snow wise?

It’s already pretty sad down low and with nothing but warm weather for the near future it isn’t going to get any better..

Having said that I’m pinning everything on the ever bullish weather forecaster at another forum who had this to say today…

Long range gfs has srs winter returning 11th sept

Sept 11 hey?

That’s Kurts guarantee of a pow day (my BBB’s birthday - it snows every year on the 11th when he’s there). As far as I know he plans to slide on his B’day.

IMO the snow is/and will continue to hold really well considering the weather.
The snow is fairly clean meaning it doesn’t absorb as much sun energy and will remain longer.

The worst case is a red-dust storm. Just a little bit of that oxidised, metallic dirt is enough to destroy 2 feet of snow/ice per day! Just imagine layering metal fakes over the snow then the metal warming 5-15℃.

With clean snow on the ground it’s temp doesn’t get much over 3 or 4℃ no matter the air temp (unless it’s windy and hot). Snow lasts weeks in the sun (if it has a base of ice under it).

Supertrail, LittleBeauty and True Blue all have cover. Hell, they are holding the World Cup Paraolympic Event all this week on WorldCup (a run name in Thredbo).
Olympic athletes from around the world are here because it’s identical conditions to what they expect at Sochi in March (snow, air, altitude, COVER) Apparently Thredbo in September is one of the few places that match Sochi conditions

The shred was like that the first year! - you had to walk the very bottom of High Noon Super trail (and as a newbie not stack it in the mud puddles!).

Don’t be discourage DRC. We will still have fun on the upper half of the mountain!

Sounds good! I’ll still keep my fingers crossed for fresh snow but I’ll also be content getting some laps in at the pool, fishing, exploring the village etc if the riding is truly woeful.

Lol the day I say something like that is the day I should probably get checked for a stroke! I do accept that would probably be a more accurate statement for the majority though and there’s nothing wrong with that! Looking forward to riding thredbo for the first time with a bunch of boardworlders!

I’m there for a week and bit shocked to see Friday flat and lower mountain.
But still enjoy the freeride half above the mountain as such Crusier, Antons, Sponars area, also 3 advanced jumps at Antons are still open…. cheese
Forget to tell that I wore a long sleeve shirt all day up the mountain no problem…

Going by some of the weather nerds comments it’s a long way out but I’m hoping you’re wrong! Might see a refreeze so it holds on just a little longer

EC does look bloody cold on this mornings runs

EC looks decidedly cold but a bit dry after Sept 10. Yeah Nah reckons as cold as -9 at Buller on the 12th:

Hopefully Wednesday and Thursday bring snow as well which could make for an awesome start to the shred!
