Pitch/Steepness of Aussie resorts

Avatar

Ok random question here, last night I was looking at the snow Japan site & I noticed that it has the degrees for the steepest slope at each resort listed on it’s website, see here - http://www.snowjapan.com/japan-ski-resorts/prefecture/nagano

It got me thinking as to what the degrees/steepness is of some of the runs on Aussie resorts, I went looking and couldn’t really find anything. I’ll admit I was kinda only looking for Hotham I got lots of ‘Mary’s Slide is the steepest pitch in Australia’ results but nothing I found actually gave me the numerical answer.

Does anyone know if this information is available and if so where can I find it? Or is there some kind of mapping service etc that I could use to work it out?

I haven’t ever seen this data, unfortunately. Could be a fun thing to do; go and measure the angles of the steepest slopes in Australia haha.

I have been to nearly all resorts in Australia, and going on a general feel for the mountains, I would say Hotham and Thredbo definitely have the steepest average pitch. I could be wrong, but that’s where my money would be.

Maybe it can be calculated roughly by gettin the Lift/Run Altitudes/Lengths?????

The Resorts should have that info somewhere?????

or you could look at a topographical map?

The borf’s a surveyor - he said for a small fee he’ll bring his jigger up and measure all the runs. I’ll be his assistant! Hah, oooooh… We could get a business going here… wink

This could actually be a really cool idea for an editorial. Let me know if anyone is interested in taking on this challenge haha. wink

See the thing is I know Hotham used to advertise the data as it’s on the old wooden run signs that are still hanging up around the resort in pubs etc. I’m just wondering why they don’t do it anymore and why it’s so difficult to find the data online.

I also found this information;

“a 100% slope is a 45 degree angle”

from - http://wikiski.com/wiki/index.php/Run_Gradings

So I guess the old wooden sign in hot doggies (or somewhere at hotham) that says Gunbarrel 42% (or something) means it’s like 20 degrees or thereabouts.

I also posted this same thread somewhere else and here are some of the comments I got;

Just going off a few numbers from memory but mostly for NSW. Top of Olympic I remember a figure of 38. Kamikaze and Rock Garden at Blue Cow I actually measured off once when Perisher had 5 metre contour maps on their master plan on their website and they both topped 40 at the top (not sure how that really relates to the actual pitch on slope though). The steepest pitches for each of those runs though are pretty friggin’ short, maybe 50-100 long before mellowing.

I’m guessing from what I hear of Hotham that’s it steepest runs are steeper and more sustained but no idea how much more!

This doesn’t answer your question - but if you had these topo maps you could figure it out.

Good resource for Hotham BC/SC.

I reckon that Gotcha ridge has some reasonably sustained 40 pitches. Not more than say 200m but really that is about the longest we have in bounds in oz.

There is steeper and more sustained western faces/blue lake/stanleys etc, but really, that doesn’t count.

Tobi, this site should help you figure out some rough numbers. Use build map menu on left hand side which includes contours and zoom right in close to Hotham. http://services.land.vic.gov.au/maps/lassi.jsp

gives 180m vert to 300m horizontal for Mary’s Slide, about 30 degrees.

Sorry for sperging on you all I’ve been dealing with a lot of data recently so my brain is asking ‘but what about the data!!!!’. Plus I think it’s a kinda interesting topic.

So it turns out there’s an app that tells you this information (of course there is).  shut eye

Ski Tracks.

Downloaded will see what happens next time I’m on the hill.

Doh! I shoulda known! I have that app!

Fastest time was 120km when I left it on whilst driving down freeway wink

Ohh yeah, I got that APP too!!!!! Hahahaaa!!!!!  teacherboy
