Personally, I haven’t flown with either but have only heard positive things about Air NZ. Saying that though, I would choose the direct flight. Stay awake as long as I can then a few night caps…Hello Canada.
$722 sounds like a decent deal, was that direct through their website?

http://www.kayak.com

It’s in US dollars so it works out to be more like $787 with Air NZ or $976 with Air Canada

So almost $200 between the flights once you pay with our money…

I’ve flown long haul with Air NZ and they were fantastic.

MEL > AKL > SFO.

Landed in the afternoon having slept most of the way ALK > SFO. Jumped on the train found my accomm, checked in, went for a walk around town then found a bar downtown to watch the NBA finals & sink some beers.  rocker

If you’re looking for somewhere to stay while in Van Samesun backpackers on Granville St.

Im going on the direct flight with AC but i have the added leg of PER to SYD. Already have ~24hrs travel so i wont be adding to it! I went the same way last time and had no issues with AC other than jet-lag really hitting me hard.
If I actually land at ~7:30am I assume it will take a while to get through customs and get the visa sorted and then get into the city so I should be able to fill the day easily by getting my SIN (maybe bank and phone too) and having a wander before crashing and heading to whistler the next day.
Will be staying downtown somewhere again (hopefully close to Howe/Robson streets). I wouldnt consider anywhere else for such a short stay due to convenience, its pretty easy to walk to most places of interest.

Hahaha, that’s the exact backpackers I had chosen to stay at!!!

Either way, I’ll be arriving and dropping my crap and then I’ll go run off and start setting up the main things I need (SIN / Bank Account / Phone) and then probably hit up a pub and watch some hockey or NBA.

I’d go the tight-ass option every time! I’ve flown air nz to san fran via auckland as well. It was a while ago but it was great!

That’s pretty normal for you though cords. I wouldn’t expect you to vote the more exxy option lol. I don’t know whether my time is worth $40 an hour… wink

A friend of mine worked there for about 5 years, I’ve never personally been there but he says good things about it.

Go watch hockey. Actually I want to go watch hockey in Van.  downer

There are no games on while I’m there… And I can’t support Vancouver as a Boston fan lol

I ticked the wrong box air nz seems better. At 7:30am in the morning you might do nothing for a couple hrs until some banks and shops start to open so it’s almost adds up to time onto your flight. air NZ you save money and I expect the stop overs ain’t too look so you can walk around the airport and do your thang. Don’t know if you get jet lag but getting in at 1:30pm means you don’t stay up for too long to get your body reticking. You might need that extra 200 for later! :D snowman

By the time you clear customs/immigration/get your bags and get into the center of town it will easily be 9am!

I think the peak hour thing is a non issue!

You only have a few days in Van, maximise your time there. I can easily see you heading to bed having be up/travelling for over 24hrs on that first day.

The Air Canada flight will force you to get out an about.

& remember the opposite is true regarding shops/services ie closing at the end of the day.

I think you will have wasted a whole productive day on the Air NZ flight. by the time you get to dropping your bag off and finding where you need to go it will be 3/4pm you might not getting anything done.

You still haven’t answered my question about what date you are searching tickets for…

Yep. I may need more than an hour to get that stuff sorted. I can always put another day in Van, I’m not exactly in a rush to get to Sun Peaks a month before the season… Current plans as follows:

Flights Syd - Van - 16th October
Hostel in Van - SameSun Backpackers Lodge Vancouver 16-19th October
SIN / Bank Account / Mobile plan - 16th October
Shopping for new clothes, snowboard, other - 17th October
Exploring Vancouver - 18th October
Vancouver vs Kamloops hockey game - 18th October
Greyhound bus - 19th October

And I totally told you what dates:

Date searches are mid October. 15th/16th is most likely.
