Whistler 2010/11 accommodation search

Avatar

Hey guys,

I know how hard it can be to find good long term accommodation in Whistler, so I thought I would start this thread to help each other out. I’m currently searching myself, so I will share any available decent accommodation that I find along the way.

Maybe let us know exactly what you are looking for and how much you want to pay, so we can narrow it down.

Personally, I’m looking for a 1 bedroom condo/apartment in or close to Whistler Village.

finney, I thought of you when I saw this one. A friend posted it to my Facebook page today. Apparently they are just starting to look at applications for the 2010/11 season. It’s based in Creekside.

I’m not sure if that’s the type of thing you’re after but check it out and let me know what you think.

For everyone else, the best starting point is the Pique: http://www.piquenewsmagazine.com/pique/index.php?cat=C_Classifieds&content=Long+Term+Accommodation+1733

Let me know how your searches go. Good luck!  cool grin

Cheers Jeremy, I’ve wasted probably a full day at work looking through craigslist at places to get an idea on prices aswell as the pique. Noticed quite a few websites listed on the pique aswell with the ads from the local agencies so checked out their sites aswell.

I think my best bet is going to be finding a place that people are already in unless I find some people who are looking for one other person. I did find a good 2 bedroom place (queen in one and double in the other) with a den which is between whistler and blackcomb on blackcomb way for $1600/month

Ideally I’d like to be located in/near the village as being a lifty I’d like to be working from the springs as it’ll give me a better chance of working the alpine lifts and I wouldn’t have to worry about catching buses on a daily basis. Don’t really want to spend over $7-800 a month for my own room in a reasonable place, anything less would be a bonus.

prices on here are pretty damn appealing

eg: http://www.mountainresrealty.com/long-term-rentals.asp?listing_id={CB41B8D4-4EFC-42A9-9AA9-6E9955892AD4}
thats where my mate was living 08/09 and the 1br place they were in was up over $2k a month. really nice place though. pool, hot tub, gym, cable, balcony and the free shuttle bus was right out the front.

I sent them an email yesterday to let them know what we’re looking for. They sent me an application form which I am filling in today. I’ll let you know how it goes.

Not sure if they are already full for the season, but whistler_will runs this place:

Hey Guys,

Was scanning through the forums and saw this!

I got a job working up at glacier creek lodge as a foody. I’ve registered for Staff Housing but if you need another person to share I’m keen as long as the prices aren’t ridiculous!

Willing to spend about $700ish/month and pref in the village.

If you’re still in the hunt for another person shoot me an email!

Hey rahhh, welcome to the forums! smile

Will this be your first season in Whistler? If you do end up in staff housing, I strongly recommend Brio or Westside over Glacier.

Sometimes it works out much better if you get a group together to share a house. If you are interested in sharing, maybe let us know in this thread and you might be able to get a group together here.

Hey rahhh,

I’m assuming it’s your first season since they aren’t giving out any staff housing for return staff for the upcoming season going by what I’ve heard form House.

I’ll 2nd rider’s comments on avoiding glacier (the ghetto). I lived there 08/09 and it was pretty crazy, and a few people I knew who moved to brio said they wished that they’d done it sooner. Westside is a bit further away from the village from memory and a room mate I had at the end of the season moved to glacier as a means to save money not having to worry about buses etc. If you want to be able to have quiet nights then housing may not be the place to live since it’s pretty much party central. Lots of drugs around aswell (neighbour was a known dealer etc) it wasn’t uncommon to walk into peoples rooms and see a pipe or a bong sitting on the table and smelling it in the hallways/stairwells etc - each to their own but it’s a dangerous trap over there that I saw a few people fall into.

Room mates in housing can be a bit hit and miss aswell. I was put with a korean dude who honestly had some of the worst hygiene i’ve ever seen (washed his hair in the sink and showered very little.. not to mention he left his mark on the kitchen). But thats whats to be expected when you’ve got such a difference in cultural backgrounds living together.  Luckily for me my other room mates were pretty relaxed (lesbian couple) and spent a lot of time just chilling in the room so I had one of the quiter rooms around compared to some other people I knew.

One thing about staff housing is that you do meet a hell of people and thats one thing that I did enjoy. You’ll meet a tonne of people working at glacier creek though so it’s not like you have to be in housing to meet people easily.

Hope I’ve shed a bit of light on the ups and downs of housing grin

Cheers,
Mike.

Heya Rider 26/Mike,

Cheers for the welcome! Yup this will be my first season in Whistler and anywhere at all.

I’ve heard the stories regarding the Glacier Housing. I didn’t know it was THAT bad. But as you said, it really depends who you get thrown with. I’ve done a bit of research and I guess what is really driving me to stay at Glacier is that it’s close to the village, close to the runs, and hopefully not have to pay for the bus too often. Brio sounds pretty good although I’m travelling alone so I’m not sure if I’d be placed there (apparently they are mainly ‘couples rooms?) Either way, I’m not too big on the party scene, so having a quieter room is probably my preference.

If I can find some people to share with that’d be pretty sweet. Hence, my post on here. Looking for a nice place, with a nice fireplace to head back to everyday! :D

Thanks for the head’s up and tips. I’m keen on sharing so if there’s anyone out there who’s looking, shoot me an email/pm. Those prices on the above websites aren’t too bad!

Just waiting on some replies from some people I know over there, see how that goes but I’ll definitely keep you in mind rahhh.. shouldn’t be too hard to get a few people together for a place. If you get in early for housing and opt for Brio then you shouldn’t have a problem IMO. If I could get into housing it’d be my pick since it’s close to the village etc.

Where are you located in aus?

I’m in Perth - no where near the snow raspberry

Cool! Thanks for keeping me in mind. If I don’t get a group together now, I’ll just try and get a group together when I’m there. When you say housing are you referring to Glacier, or just Staff Housing in general?

Just staff housing in general

Paying an arm and a leg for internet atm (travelling in Europe!) so will check the links above to accomm a bit later.

Just putting it out there, my girlfriend and I will be in Canada mid Oct and staying the whole season, would be keen to hook up some accommodation in Whistler if possible. We’d be looking for a bit more of a quieter place and hopefully not the ghetto sorta housing finney has described wink

Getting accommodation in Big White is the other option. Anyone considering going there? Don’t mind if it’s Whistler or Big White, just depends on where we can get accommodation and a job.

haha sounds like everyone on here is up for a quieter place.. I’ve got little (no) experience in renting places so it’s all pretty new to me so I’m trying to learn what I can and need to get an idea on references etc.

Dan: Big White was my 2nd choice due to the fact that I know people there but since I’ve got the job in whistler I’m heading there. Much more terrain and what not so it was always my number 1 priority to go there. Mate of mine has worked whistler and visited big white but has opted for whistler again just due to the terrain available there.

Keep us posted with your decision making process and if you’re in whistler I think we could all work something out (as it is I count 4 people here keen for a quiet place to live for the season). I know I’m getting there a bit later but I’m sure we could come to some agreement in regards to rent etc. As it is I was expecting that if I line something up prior to leaving I’ll be paying for a period prior to my arrival.

The house I stayed at two seasons ago is available for this season. It has six bedrooms, three stories, two bathrooms, gym, tuning room, private lake, gas fireplace, awesome kitchen/living area, walking distance to Creekside, 100m to bus stop. It’s not cheap but I have spoken to the landlord and it is available and worth the money. If you are interested, see if you can get a good group together and I will give you her contact details.
