The Remarkables
And they’re off. The Peak to Peak Race just started with the run down from the lookout at the top of Shadow Basin. Crazy! The guys and girls are on their way down Homeward on skis now, followed by a mountain bike ride down the access road, kayaking and then more biking and running up to Coronet. Sounds like torture to me!
I’ve been running a similar sort of thing for a few years now for a group of about 50 peeps each year.
We always have a running start (about 50m) then everyone gets a sealed envelope with directions to the first checkpoint. At the first check point they must perform an activity (use your imagination) to get instructions for the next checkpoint, and so on until the finish point; usually at a bar at the bottom of the hill.
The route is unknown and I always make it so there’s a few decision points along the way such as taking a lift (long, easy), or legging it uphill for a bit (potentially quicker).
At Buller it went Summit, CP1 - half way down LBS, CP2 bottom of Fed, finish at Alberg bar.
Last year’s was epic at Perisher. (thanks for your help Ozgirl!) The start was at the top of Summit Chair, CP1 was near the creek at the bottom of Pleasant Valley Chair, CP2 behind the mid station restaurant and the finish was at the bottom of Mt P.
If it sounds all orderly and too long, it’s not. It’s totally chaotic (as all CDs should be!) and they are usually all over in <30mins.
There’s always the guy that tees up a snowmobile ride with mountain ops (well within the rules of course - i.e. there being no rules), but I’m usually on to it and tell him to drop him in the wrong spot or mess with him somehow.
This year’s race it next week actually - I’d give you the deets, but then I’d have to kill you
I’m happy to knock up a small scale version for this year’s shred if there is interest?
If I was at the snow, I’d ask to join the race!
