if so, how often? and do you know when it needs that extra water proofing from tx wash?

thanks

EDIT: Nikwax is now available at the Boardworld Store: http://bwstore.co/nikwax thumbsup

I always use Nikwax Tech Wash for washing outerwear. It’s specifically formulated for cleaning waterproof/breathable outerwear, while reviving waterproofing and breathability. I probably wash my outerwear once a season, or whenever I feel like the water repellency needs reviving.

From there, you should use TX.Direct Wash-In or Spray-On. Personally, I prefer the spay as I find it easy to apply and it saves doing another cycle in the machine. TX.Directs adds water repellency to the fabric for maximum performance.

Sounds technical. Just like jeans…dont wash em. If my gear stinks I air it in the sun with a bit of feebreez and seems to smell good to me. Dunno what others near me smell.
Could u wash em normally then spray a waterproofer on after?

I don’t wash mine, either.

I dont wash either.

dont know if its a myth or not but ive heard if you put smelly items in the freezer for a week then they lose all the smell, kills all the bacteria or something. just put the item in a plastic bag wink

Most Outerwear can be washed a handful of times before they lose their waterproof/breathability properties!!!!!

But if ya wanna treat them, use the stuff that Jez has recommended!!!!! Tried and Tested!!!!!

* I’m like others here though, I never wash my gear unless it’s visually dirty!!!!!

Just air it out in a shaded/breezy place for as long as ya can!!!!!

Mold is the biggest cause of Stink and Ruin for ya Outerwear!!!!!

My gear is only washed when it gets really muddy and just gets put in like normal washing but end of season is a re waterproofing wash for storage..

I have never washed any of my outerwear to be honest.

I had to wash my gear while I did my stint in Whistler. Doing 55 days of riding over a 70day period your gear gets a lot of use. Doing lots of top to bottom runs your gear gets drenched in sweat because of the length and also temperature change.

I used the Tech Wash like rider and It got rid of the smell, brightened the colours and helped with waterproofing again.

Yeah, but those washes were mostly needed due to Episodes of Sharting!!!!!

hahahaha! There was no sharts in Whistler! I was so proud! 2.5 months shart free! I Shart Anon. Support group was so proud

That is downright nasty!
Just to continue the de-rail a bloke I worked with once told us of his mrs waking up in the morning asking him why she now had freckles on her chest.
Minor shart on the opposition.

Haha

A good mate of mine a few years ago, we went out one night and it got particularly loose. He comes home and goes to bed next to his sleeping GF wearing his undies (usually sleeps naked)

Well a coupe of hours later she screams at him and starts hitting him. Turns out he relaxed and let it out, so to speak, and for a reason unknown to him he luckily was wearing the undies. She got some residual moistness but no particles on her hahaha

Back on topic.

I think a lot of people over think this!

I wash my gear when visually dirty and/or after a week or so riding straight. (so when I came back from my trip in the Nth hem this Jan I washed everything)

But I also have only in recent years own either Columbia or North Face gear. Both of which recommend just a normal wash and dryer (yes dryer!) cycles. The use of a dryer reactivates the waterproofing apparently.

So check the care label on your gear. Maybe it is like my gear?
