In the wake of my wisdom teeth getting ripped out I sold my Ranger on Sunday to a surgeon who wanted it for his wife to use to take hay from the north shore home to their horse on the central coast. Got decent money for it but that meant I had to get some new wheels fast. I went back to the local VW dealer as I wanted the Rok but then stopped at the Jeep dealer and test drove the MY14 Grand Cherokee Laredo CRD.
I came so close to grabbing the Jeep it wasn’t funny, new 8 speed gearbox, V6 turbo diesel 177kw and 550nm of torque it’s a bit of a beast. I went and test drove it again for about 40mins on Tuesday and worked out everything about it, test fit my surfboards and I really liked it. Still there was this gnawing itch that I would be pissed everytime I went camping or surfing not having a ute, putting shit in the back of a wagon and not the love of throwing everything in the back of a ute. It dawned on me there really was only one choice to make so I found a dealer with what I wanted in stock and made the deal.
I picked up my new pride and joy today, swapped out the rims on the way home and did the rounds showing the boys ha ha. Cause I picked it up so quick it’s missing the hard cover and tow bar that I ordered but they will go on next week, I’m gunna install an 8inch DVD/GPS unit and my old 4channel amp and sub and it will be setup for the season ahead!
Looks awesome mate, nice buy. My neighbour recently got one, and they are so roomy and comfy inside. One of the nicest utes on the market.
Dope ride NBG..
However i cant help to notice how “cheese cutter” the wheels look…
Maybe its the photo?? Or maybe i just like trucks with chunky tires?? Or maybe because i lived in the US fo to long?? Haha!
Awesome! Love our Rok!
Only bit I don’t like is the stupid GPS DVD thing
Talk to Azz about that one
Does it keep telling you where to go Tambo?
LOL
Sorry NBG, it doesn’t do it for me, there’s something missing.
Shit yeh mate!
Surferguy the wheels are 17’s, the tyres are 265 65 R17 so they’re not cheese cutter by normal standards, the tyres I replaced were 245 65 R17 so these are about an inch wider and add an inch in rolling diameter. I wasn’t going to go any bigger as it puts out the speedo necessitating a trip to the dealer to get recalibrated and it also makes the gearing taller which I didn’t want to do too much as it reduces acceleration times and makes the engine either drop gears or puts it under more load. Minimal perhaps but just my reasons not to.
When I got it home and came time to put it in the garage I was so glad I didn’t go bigger, no way it woulda fitted in the garage if I had, there’s a bees dick in it as it is height wise so I struck a happy medium I reckon.
Today I bought a ute liner and sidesteps for it and fitted them both and made some mods to the garage door so I’m not freaking out so much parking it, been a pretty good day as far as getting shit done. Next week it’s back to the dealer for the hard lid and the tow bar and that leaves only one more thing which brings me to Tambo’s post.
I’m going an aftermarket 8’ screen in the front with GPS, DVD, Wi FI, 3G, USB etc. The 3G and WiFi are kinda gimmicky I suspect, the main use will be DVD and GPS and the USB input. Happy to see that things have progressed and they mostly will play movies via USB these days as well as music, I think they will do it from SD and microSD some of them as well. I’m not even sure I want to retain the parking sensors, I’m not convinced of their effectiveness just yet, think a reverse cam might be better. I’m stuck between going for a WinCE or an Android version, I’m not a car audio head unit buff so maybe someone else on here has some ideas.
Once the stereo is in I will run the leads for the amp and install it somewhere as yet to be determined. Then the question will be what I power with it, if I use my old sub set up or get more excited and run two shallow subs in some DIY enclosure that fits in under the front of the rear seats. Needs more thought and planning for that one, we’ll see what happens.
Once the stereo side of things is done I think it will be pretty much sorted, I might get a nudge bar or something perhaps but dunno if that is needed, dare I say it that might depend upon how much I think my better half will be driving it, not having a dig at women drivers, she’s on her green P’s and parking is NOT a strong suit.
Spaz, I haven’t had a sticker on a car of mine for over 10 years, I just don’t really like it to be honest and then there’s people who put them on the duco, I can’t even fathom how someone could do that, awesome way to wreck the paintwork.
Driving the Rok around today has been an amazing pleasure, the 8 speed auto is effortless and pulls hard when you want it to, most of the time however you don’t even notice it changing gear. The interior is just a really nice place to be, I can’t wait to get it out on the highway for a trip!
contraz mate, sweet ride…
Does it keep telling you where to go Tambo?
LOL
hahaha! Well actually it doesn’t do a very good job of it, and it must be from a bicycle because the estimated travel times are ridiculously long. Stupid thing. I curse it and we never use it.

Have a look at this website lots of ideas on car entertainment units and touch screens and all that sort of crap.
I have a spare touchscreen if u want i will give it to you… (free) Its a screen only that slides in and out that u hook up to a pc.
I use to have a mini computer in the car that was hooked up to my amp and speakers and gps and all that sort of shit while i had my Nissan 200sx.
...
Lanox cheers for the offer mate but I’m looking for something that looks OEM and comes with a straight plug and play wiring harness so no cutting and soldering required. Very against any wire cutting on VW with canbus and still with 2 years and 363 days of warranty!
Looking at something like one of these sort of things.
i have a double din unit in my hilux… i have a sub 12’ sub on the middle back seat floor.. became a 4 seater.. but 5 will be squashed.. pumps great.. my amps are underneath my front seats.. as an idea [=
and btw.. gratz on the new ride
Nyte that pretty describes what was in my old ranger, double din HU, 4 channel amp under the drivers seat powering splits and shallow mount 8” pioneer sub in a small box on the middle of the rear seat. The Rok has storage lockers under the front seats so I’m thinking perhaps behind the rear seat for the amp, the sub or subs will be a bit of an interesting thing though.
