The Missus and I are in the early stages of a partial knock down rebuild/Reno of our house and I’m having a crack at doing a lot of it myself.
We are gutting the inside so plenty of walls, doors, gyprocking, 2 bathrooms is just the beginning of my work.
Any advice for me from people in the know?
A big hammer.
Trusty crowbar has been mighty helpful. Sledge is next on my shopping list.
Just got a reciprocating saw for my birthday which will be getting a work out.
I am a builder,
whats the extent of your renos?
Couple of basic tips with a knock down;
-Check any walls to be demolished/have openings cut out arent load bearing. Dont want no roof collapses.
- How old is the house? pre 86, check for asbestos before ripping walls/ceilings especially bathrooms/wet areas
-
It is quite extensive, we have had the new plans designed by a mate that recently finished his architecture degree, I know which walls are load bearing and will be bringing in a structural engineer to confirm supporting beam specifications etc.
I also have the decision to remove the asbestos in the lower level myself or pay someone to do it for me.
I will be getting a builder to get the extension built up to lock up and then will be taking over the internal work like gap rocking and flooring. Probably try and con the builder into moonlighting as his labourer to save money/learn a bit more to do future works myself

With asbestos, if it isn’t a major amount Just do it yourself. I have my asbestos removal and supervisors licence.
Just get some PVA glue, water it down into a spray bottle, spray generously over all asbestos. Then using a hammer and nail punch, punch the nail heads through the sheet and remove sheeting, Wrap sheets in black builders plastic, duct tape up and transport to nearest asbestos disposal place.
The builder may let you help him out, actually i don’t see why he wouldn’t really. But whether he will drop the price by much if you do I don’t know. An unskilled labourer isn’t really worth that much/able to do many things so yeh, for your sake i hope he does!
My mate removed his asbestos the same way, our only problem is there is timber panelling fixed to it. I’d need to remove that without damaging anything to be able to get at the asbestos/nail heads.
Our house was built by a plumber on his own, in stages during the ‘80’s. it’s a bit of a nightmare lol
Sperm suit, HEPA filtered dust mask and spray as you rip off the panelling and you should be sweet mate!
Yeh i have worked on a few of those. Not enjoyable!
Lol saw the title and realized Im a tradie with a very particular set of skills but none of which would help you out sorry mate..

Install IT / Network wiring while your at it, having ports all around your house for high speed Internet is a major plus when trying to sell a house to anyone unless you try to sell to your grandma…

What if he wants to install perimeter defenses for his new house?

What’s your trade?
Great tip Tj!
If you know anyone in demolition you can get plenty of cat6.
I recently began wiring our place, which is a BIG single story house (8 bedroom, 2 wings + granny flat). After fitting 100m of cat6 I had only wired 2 rooms. The rest is 2.4 wifi until I complete the job. Getting it through wall spacing to a wall port is a pita - best doing it without the gip-rock.
Run some to the bathroom for future proofing. In fact run it to every room, double or tripple in office and entertainment areas. You never know what gagets will be developed.
Fitter machinist. So unless you are needing something put together or machined can’t really help you..
Can’t comment on what TJ said..

Mainly in areas where you think a computer or TV will go.
So at least 1 port where the router is, in the study, in the lounge, in each bedroom, behind any TV units.
Even if you only ever have 1 computer, the actual bonus is when selling the house. With the growth of IPTV (internet TV), Torrents, Smart TVs and the price of computers, a normal person will easily have 2-3 computers each. This will boost your sales price (and get a “that’s a nice feature”) from perspective buyers for a relatively cheap price while doing your home upgrade.
My house of 3 people have 8 devices that can be plugged into a router at any 1 time. While wireless is great, if you have a decent sized house (mine isn’t huge) wireless can be patchy as all hell in bedrooms, upstairs / downstairs from the router, in the far room etc. Plus the more devices that use it, (phones etc) the more drop outs you get.
