awesome to see a few of us that seem to be pretty much in the same boat. maybe we can setup a private fb group for whistler 2013/2014 closer to departure.
The best place to be is right here on Boardworld. The Whistler Community Blog will be back next season, and it’s run by other members and myself who have years of experience working and living in Whistler. There is a wealth of knowledge here on the forums and we are always happy to help. Check out the community blog from this past season here: https://www.boardworld.com.au/forums/viewthread/8248/
I’ll be the next one to jump on the bandwagon of the most informative thread o the internet regarding whistler for aussies and the like.
I was planning on going last year fresh out of high school, but my parents half forced me to come to uni, so here i am deferring while they are overseas.
I’m interested in what Andy has said in his last post, you say you’ve hooked up jobs before you go, what did you do, submit your resume and then do a skype interview or something? My resume is half decent with years of customer service so i’m hoping that is enough for some work on the mountain.
I am planning to go over mid to late September ~20th ish. so i can be in whistler for the job fairs. Has anyone been to a job fair before that could shed some light on the situation? regarding work - should i live in Vancouver or something for the months until the season starts? whats the go?
Looking forward to seeing some of my kind over there
Welcome to Boardworld.
This would be my checklist if I was in your situation:
1. Apply for your visa now (if you haven’t already). http://www.whpcanada.org.au/
2. Make sure you have a solid resume and have it printed out.
3. You need to apply for a criminal record check and have this with you when you apply for a job with Whistler Blackcomb. You can apply for this through your local police station. It can take up to eight weeks to come through, so make sure you do this with time to spare.
4. Get to Vancouver before the Job Fair. Apply for your SIN. http://www.servicecanada.gc.ca/eng/sin/apply/how.shtml
5. Get to Whistler before the Job Fair. Make sure you have accommodation sorted temporarily, i.e at one of the hostels. Get a phone activated and open a bank account with RBC or TD Canada Trust.
6. Make sure you get to the Job Fair. You will probably need to check details on the Whistler Blackcomb website (not sure if you need to set up a time or something). http://www.whistlerblackcomb.com/employment/jobs-at-whistler-blackcomb/index.aspx
If you follow those steps, I really don’t see any reason why you shouldn’t get a job with Whistler Blackcomb, which will also sort you out with a season pass (and staff accommodation if required).
Guys, please check out the Whistler Community Blog. We run it every year here on the forums, where you can all chat, help each other out, meet up, go shredding etc. https://www.boardworld.com.au/forums/viewthread/8248/
Hi Guys
Jeremy (rider26) has personally asked me to give a little input on this thread regarding the jobs fair in whiz, as we did the 08/09 season together and i had success with the jobs fair by securing a job in food and bev at Dustys in Creekside..
Sorry if im rehashing on what people have already said, (to lazy to read over the forum). Its best to secure a jobs fair interview before you head out, this is done through the WB website as far as i know, unless its changed, also maybe check the intrawest site too as they own the WB. However at the time i didnt know you had to have an interview lined up, i was under the impression it was first in best dressed which wasn’t the case. However i did show up relative early with no interview and secured a job interview with the lovely Hayley from Dusty’s bar and grill. Maybe the same could work for you too??
Jobs are always posted and updated on the whistler website, which helps.
I guess it was just pot luck how it all came together. I know thats not what you wanna hear, but the key is securing that pre interview…
Good luck!
the key is securing that pre interview…
Hey guys, this information is really important. Looks like you need to secure an interview for the Job Fair. If that’s your plan, make sure you follow the right steps to secure an interview.
I just want to say, Rider, you’re my hero.
and @surfer: thanks so much for sheding light on the job situation.
1. I have my visa :(its being processed)
2. I have my resume, maybe I could PM it to someone and they could have a look at it and see if its what whistler maybe looking for?
3. I have a crim check (from last year when i had a failure to launch)
4.How long does a SIN take only a day or two?
5. I have looked at the hostel eg Hi-Whistler. but i only have about 6500 CAD to take over which is for everything including board and gear so i really cant afford to stay there long
6. When do people find out about if they are successful getting a job from the fair, + staff accom since dont have a hugh amount to spend on temp accommodation
and with what surfer said, i definitely wouldnt plan anything without getting a pre interview (july i think they open) and early bird lift ticket sales finish about october 8th.
EDIT: and now what rider has said
this information is really important. Looks like you need to secure an interview for the Job Fair. If that’s your plan, make sure you follow the right steps to secure an interview.
Thanks!
No worries at all. That’s what we’re here for.
Sure, feel free to email me your resume and I will look at it on Monday. I don’t think it matters too much as long as you have it set out nicely, maybe with some references etc. My email is jeremy(at)boardworld.com.au
I think they will only accept criminal record checks from very recently, i.e. within six months. They need it recent. I remember I had to provide a new one each season. I am almost certain you will need to get a new one.
You will get your SIN details there on the spot. They basically stamp a form saying you have applied for it, which is all your employer needs (give the form to them). Eventually they will send you your card in the mail.
You should know straight away whether you got the job. I think they basically tell you on the spot where you will be working. From there, you can go into staff housing (I would recommend Brio if you get a choice).
Let us know if you have any questions.
I’ve only just got a criminal records check recently, within the last few weeks, for another employer that required it, but i dont think ill get a copy of it though, so i will have to submit another one most likely.
Good to know most of these things dont take long, If you get a job out of the job fair, what do you do for the 2-3 months up to the start of the ski season, i dont want to burn through all of my money and not have enough to survive / last the whole season
I think in the last few posts every question i email to whistler (about 100) has been answered so thanks!
edit: double post. my bad!
If you follow those steps, I really don’t see any reason why you should get a job with Whistler Blackcomb.
Lol’d at unintentionally negative sentence!
Amazingly useful info just tying it all together for us noobs.you guys have been super helpful and this is a such a fantastic resource.

It has to be a federal police check. Cant just be from one of the other companys. double check it
@ K2, it was done by the AFP but it was for a company so i dont think it counts, which isnt a problem.
Yeh, thats all good! AFP is the main thing. There is a lot of private companies that are registered to do the check. THey are generally 24 hr checks and cost a bit more. But they wont work.
Yours will be sweet
joy89, awesome to see you on here bro!!!
And stoked you are keen on going to Whistler and getting into snowboarding! It truly is an amazing place. Does their website say yet when the job fairs will be? As good as Whistler is (and it should be choice No 1), there are lots of other great mountains in Canada too. Big White was really cool, just smaller scale compared to Whistler (but same goes for nearly everywhere). It had true ski in ski out. Not sure how much accommodation there is for staff in the resort though, lots may commute from Kelowna? Definitely a priority to go somewhere where you can live at the resort (such as Whistler lol). I always wanted to check out Revelstoke (still do) as it sounds awesome. As you know I didn’t get a job when I lived in Whistler, but I definitely didn’t push for it as much as I could of as I had enough money to get by. Applying online for jobs gave me no leads at all. Having said that, I rocked up in Whistler in early-mid Oct, I think not long after the WB job fair was on, so missed the main job op. There are a few other job fairs such as for big resort accommodation chains like 4 seasons. I went to one and there were like 100 people or so!
Anyhow, Rider & BW give so much useful and friendly snowboarding related advice - so you’ve come to the right place!
Dan I agree about going to other resorts besides Whistler!
I woudl apply everywhere so you have options and worst comes to worst a fall back plan.
I think Whistler do the job fair things cause they have the pick of people to choose from as everyone wants to go there.
The rest of the resorts do it the old fashion way by application, then phone/skype interviews.
The idea of sitting around whistler unable to earn money or board will worry me! If you get a job at another resort you may be able to leave australia later (and be earning money here!)
If you follow those steps, I really don’t see any reason why you should get a job with Whistler Blackcomb.
