its called a banana saver.. Its a hard banana shaped case.  So it won’t get squashed.. Haha

Haha H0z

I was going to say that - but remember he will be camping at the lake most likely.

And driving to the ski tube - so snow will be melted by the time he gets back to the car.

Funnily enough they sell hard containers shaped like bananas at Kmart wonder how they would hold up to a decent back slapper.

You sure can suggest it but it would be odd after I mentioned the same thing to you earlier today! smile

For a couple of bucks it might be worth a shot, to be honest bananas are one of my least favourite fruits but hard to argue with them as a quick healthy energy source.

We do the big family trip and I can tell you we’re looking to save every penny.  I was actually half thinking about doing a thread about tight-ass tips.  If you’re going to ride in Aus, the main things would be:

- Hero Pass or similar to keep lift ticket costs under control
- Accom - if you can get into a club lodge they are usually cheaper than commercial accommodation.  Cheaper again would be to stay off the mountain, but that’s a bit of a fun killer.
- Park entry - don’t go to Hotham haha
- Food - at a club lodge you self-cater and they have good kitchen set-ups.  Some of them will cook for you for only a small price increase.  if it’s in a good spot you can rocket back there for lunch.  I did that a bit last year but it did eat into my riding time a bit.  Maybe just cop a lousy chico roll or something to keep you going between awesome breakfast and dinner.
- Spring!  So much cheaper in terms of accom and lift tickets!

I also have some tips for saving money with kids, too.

tight-ass tips thread would be good.

I have a meal that I take with me that can be good for most of the weekend, is delicious and filling that I make to avoid eating crappy, expensive on the hill food. Happy to give the recipe here or in the other thread if it gets made!

People pay for convenience.
It’s more difficult to go to Aussie resorts cheaply but it can be done.
Hell, my usual weekly budget starts at $400, travelling alone (not including lift tickets). $150 of that is fuel.

Pre-cooked pasta takes 30s with boiled water; Get a camping stove for car -they cost $20- mix in pesto and viola! Gourmet pasta for lunch. or go really cheap and instant noodles -I add mixed spice and soy sauce-
Long life milk (or soymilk) kept in an esky so it doesn’t freeze at night. Make your own HC or coffee/tea. Put on your weet-bix then heat bowl on camping stove = warm hands and warm cereal.
Esky’s keep things warm as well h0z wink
If your a day tripper microwave your meal at home/accom and get it over hot, then put it in the esky and pack esky with other hot items (hot stones in towels), to fill the air space (heat stones in an oven NOT MICROWAVE). It will still be warm come lunch. Baked dinner left overs are my favorite - I’ve kept them warm this way (with help from car heater) for 10hrs.

There are good places to eat, just don’t eat where everyone else does (it’s the closest place to the lift).

If your being overcharged it’s your own fault for expecting convenience.

If you pack your lunch - HAVE A PICNIC ON THE TOP OF A MOUNTAIN FFS! teacherboy
Build a table and chairs with snow - after you’ve eaten it’s easily turned into a jump.

Some of you should try an overnight BC trip. On mountain costs =  $0.00 . Better runs that are longer. But not very convenient. Earn your lines. This makes sleeping in your car or someones floor seem a luxury.

Lift lines - stop following people and try some new terrain that has less tracks on it. Normally there aren’t many people at the bottom rolleyes  And keep away from terrain parks/beginner areas.
First lifts often appear busy but they aren’t.
At perisher walk away from FV.
In Thredbo just get there before 10am.
Don’t return to where you started until you need to.

In Australia we pay more for everything (clothes, electronics, software… etc.) Running a business here is the most expensive place in the world. Running a business with only 6 weeks of good turnover means costs go up. Of course it’s cheaper overseas.

The cheapest way to do an Aussie snow season is to spend a whole season there. It cost about the same as a 2 week trip. But for most it’s not convenient! Sell your new car and it will cover luxury accom in the resort for the whole winter. wink

Take away the days it’s “man made on ice” in Australia and there are still +30days of quality snow that’s comparable to OS resorts. Most people only go OS at peak season, in the off season many places are as bad as here, just look at the 2010 winter Olympics in Vancouver. big surprise

I would love to do this however I lack the equipment and the mates that would be keen.

We hiked the mountain behind mt P last year a couple of times which was awesome, until we had to come back lol.

.

We start at smiggins most mornings and get there for first lifts, we head up the Link tbar, might hit the mt piper fun park before it gets packed, then head down the back to interceptor and either bum around on there for a while or head straight to blue cow.

We head back to smiggins just before lunch so we can eat at the car then take advantage of people having lunch and smaller lines to head across to the top of the perisher quad or make our way towards eyre tbar.

This year we might start at guthega now that we are all getting more confident with our boarding.

Picnics on the mountain are great. Sit in the snow with some good food and some wine if you can be arsed carrying it. It will only work if the mountain isn’t bad weather with 90km winds but you can always head to the lower sections. Great if you take the lady also raspberry

Some great tips Spaz! I’m usually at the mountain at like 8am waiting to ride and get up the mountain. I miss the morning que but you will get traffic later on. You have to stay off the first runs because they are usually the beginner runs.

In Australia running a business is expensive but its also expensive in other countries who charge you stuff all for the tickets. Switzerland is also very expensive $69 CHF which is about $69 AUS. Half day pass also available for $6 less, 4 vallees of terrain.

Making the thread for cheap snowboarders!

Would be nice if the ticket prices changed with conditions but that will never happen. Late or early season should be half price to allow people a taste of the snow and it will give them more customers in the future.

Do what we did in Whistler.
Carry a couple of backpacks up with your food, and drinks (booze wink ) and take it up to lunch spot first thing and DITCH THE BAG THERE! Then you dont have to worry about riding with all your crap, you can have a good lunch in a nice spot on the mountain and if you find a good enough spot, you can head there before patrol does last rounds and have a after lift close/sunset beverage to finish teh day with and ride out over some runs that are being freshly groomed!

The resorts usually have a late starter pass that is +$10 less than a full day.
I don’t know if they offer these anymore.

There are ways of getting cheap lift tickets.
Everyone is aware of the pre season pass for $699. That’s about the same price as any other resort in the USA.
For convenience you can buy a day pass on the day you arrive, but convenience costs extra wink

That’s poaching K2.
Plus the groomers would gladly run you over with a piston bully for destroying the snow before it has had time to set. I know, I’ve been chased by angry cat drivers and in another incident had the grooming team waiting at the bottom to beat me up (those stories another time).

Nice options there NBG but you should try dropping down the back of Mt Piper from the T-bars (don’t they start before Link), there is some fun terrain in there peak season. Guthega is a long chair ride first thing, but worth it!

NorthernLights all you need is legs, a shovel and a sharp mind (plus food supplies).
Mankind didn’t survive the last ice age with fancy sleeping bags and nylon materials. Learn how to build an ice cave incase the survival huts are full. If you ever visit a survival hut take some none perishables and stock up the cupboard.
My first BC overnighter cost me $100 in gear. I survived a 80kmh blizzard.

haha, yeh I actually havent poached groomers. But when I did leave the mountain late and the whole run out was groomed, I was stoked with it. But I did see people following doing turns behind a groomer as he was going down. I didnt agree with that.

Still I think a bag ditched on the hil under a tree is the best way to have lunch and drinks for cheap
