The other day, the guy at Bakers Delight asked me if I was interested in some promotion to do with Horse Racing!!!!!

He then gave me a funny look when I told him that I don’t have anything to do with it as it’s friggen cruel!!!!!

Maybe he needed to be whipped a bit more when he’s at work, then when he’s he redundant be processed into various things?????

I love this:

For years when running whitewater we have used the term “give ‘er’” meaning to send it and run the rapid, regardless of fears or abilities. This weekend I got to witness the spirit of that term first hand. And not in difficult class V that you would normally associate it with, but rather on a the more navigable class II waters of the Upper Colorado.

Weeks ago I was introduced to my friend’s son, Sterling. A handsome, polite, adventurous and carismatic 12 year old that lives with cerebral palsy.

Not only does he live with it, he conquers it, skiing more days then most of my friends each season. His dad told me how much he liked seeing the images of our SUP river adventures. My immediate thought was lets figure a way to get him out there with us. A plan was made for this past weekend.

After meeting at State Bridge we made our way to the put in at Rancho Del Rio and suited up. While I was amazed at Sterling’s casual demeanor at the put in I was equally taken with his father’s patience and caring. Just putting on his son’s wetsuit took 15 minutes, and the whole time his dad was encouraging and understanding. As a dad myself I know the struggles with my own children and my lack of patience sometimes. Both his mom and dad epitomize incredibly selfless parenting and unconditional love.

After attaching his walker to my SUPerNatural’s grab handles and front bars, his dad carried him to the river and we were off. He was immediately smiling and loving it, I was the nervous one. But not Sterling. As we approached the first rapid he never hesitated. Never said stop. When asked “you want to do this one?” the answer was always “yes”. Considering others I have taken on the river that are full of fear and anxiety, Sterling was styling it. He never complained it was cold, listened to directions perfectly, paddled his fair share and kept that grin going. I wish all my paddling partners were like him.

And in the end, we greased it. As a team. Not one fall or flip. By the mid way point I was no longer nervous because he made me realize there was nothing to fear. Just point it, smile and send it. And while I have always thought it had to be the hardest whitewater in order to be fun, Sterling made myself and others realize on Saturday that just being out there is the real joy .

Take some time today, slow down and know that you can make a difference in someones life so easily. A river is the perfect environment to share with others, especially those that will benefit the most but have the least opportunities to access it. We as a community of paddlers and river runners have the capability to help. Be selfless, smile more, fear less and by all means, give er’.
