New Zealand 2013 Wanaka/Queenstown

*sigh*

The reason xdfubar is asking questions is so he’s better informed/prepared to “make up his own mind” when the time comes. He’s looking for appropriate advice, and mine takes into consideration driving time, the fact that he’ll be doing all the driving, and their respective riding abilities.

A nice leisurely drive from Ohau in the morning still gives them the afternoon at TC before check-in time at their Wanaka accommodation. Well within both their abilities, they can lap the Easy Rider trail that snakes down underneath the 6-seater chair all afternoon, and at least get a reasonable feel for the resort so they’re better informed when it comes to planning their next visit. He can also do a few runs down Main Street, and still meet his missus at the bottom. Sure, the Saddle and Matukituki Basins are “better suited to intermediate and advanced riders”, but the green area of the Home Basin is perfectly fine for all abilities. A short day is better value for them, as they can just buy afternoon passes - which, unlike Australian half-day passes, at least offer a discount that’s not a complete insult. If they get there before the afternoon passes kick in, xdfubar can hang out with his missus at the FREE beginner area beforehand - and help her work on her riding skills while also helping her get used to drag lifts. It’s a perfect compromise.

And in this instance, “on your way through” or “between” essentially translates to “while you’re already in the car driving, you may as well . . .” - it’s really not that tough a concept to comprehend.

Oh sorry, I guess we were using different dictionaries. But yeah whatever you say. The local rider obviously knows far less.

Is it really THAT tough to comprehend the fact that when driving from Ohau in the morning with the intention of checking into your Wanaka accommodation that evening, visiting Treble Cone in the interim qualifies as “on your way through” or “between”? It’s all about context.

It’s unfortunate that evidently, a certain “local rider” does “obviously know[] far less” about the best ways for newcomers to NZ to make the most out their travel time, their money, and their overall NZ experience. Perhaps if a certain “local rider” attempted to view this trip from the perspective of the people actually taking the trip instead of that of a “local rider”, they’d actually be in a position to give more useful/appropriate advice?

Hey

Just a few questions for the experienced NZ riders. I have seen some deals for 7 days , 5 nights, flights, car hire, accomodation etc .. etc

Is it better to go it solo and book it all myself or just book a trip in with a travel agent. I have done a few bit of travel and my mate is coming who is very experienced traveler. Will be homies riding the pow smile as the girls will be heading back to Europe for summer.

What’s the deal with taking my own gear on planes now they all charge from Oz to NZ?

Sorry dopey questions, just looking for a few tips.

Thanks BW

To answer the gear stuff, put your board in the check-in luggage and grab a big bag for carry on like (see link below:) which will stay under the 10kg limit for your clothes. You should be fine for a week trip.

I’d always book solo, for sure…but it depends how rich and lazy you are! haha

and I’m with TJ…buy the 20ish kgs of checked luggage and fit as much crap as you can in your boardbag and check that in, and then take a decent sized carry on bag for the rest.

Was just reading in an article over xmas that a lot of the air carriers were jacking up prices or applying prices to have snowboard gear. Was just a test to see if any one knows if NZ flights are doing the same smile

Hey xdfubar, have you seen the Hyundai Santa Fe ad that’s on TV at the moment? That’s the road up to the Ohau snowfields they’re driving on - from Lake Ohau Lodge at the bottom. The sensational view alone is worth the trip - and as amazing as it looks in the ad, it doesn’t do the real thing justice. Here’s a still, showing the road edges I referred to earlier.

Was just looking at flights to NZ - it seems with Jetstar you only pay more for your oversized luggage if you are over the weight limit, so really just like normal checked baggage. Does anyone know different? I only glanced at the website really so not sure if that’s right.

Cool photo btw Chucky. What time of year was it taken?

I didn’t take that photo. It’s a still from when they made the TV ad. As there’s still snow up high in the ad, I’m guessing it was taken mid-spring. Here’s one of mine down at Lake Ohau in mid-winter:
