Where do you draw the line with resort entry $
Finally the Vic resorts have released their early bird deals for season resort entry.
Here’s the costs. to get your car into the resort every day for the season, if you buy this month.
Hotham $435 
(April, online only), $495 (after that, online only) $535 if purchased in person. Cars $43.50/day online, $48 if you buy it up there in person.
Falls Creek $270 
(April, online) $310 (after that online) $40/day online $42 if you buy in person
Buller $270 $215 for locals, $38/day add $10 for overnight. Gets you to the carparks, not the village.
NSW resorts All Parks Pass including Kosi, $190 for 1 year 
, $335 for 2 years.
Now I think Hotham (our favourite place for sure) is just too expensive, and that the price will put people off. 
So where do you draw the line and make the decision to go “somewhere else”?
But, considering that the prices for a day are pretty similar, is the real issue that they are trying to discourage season pass holders in favour of day visitors?
(We bought our pass at the end of 2012, an option for a couple of weeks, first time offered)

Thats the great thing about NSW - you get into every National Park in NSW with ours.
I truly am not sure at what point I would not pay the entry fee… I am okay (to an extent) with the price of entry to Kozi Nat Park (granted I don’t pay it at the moment!)
It is BS down in Victoria. I only paid about every 3rd or 4th visit. That way it worked out to be a reasonable price.

The Resort entry is purely for EACH resort. Ie the Falls Pass doesn’t work at Hotham and vice versa. There is an all mountain pass available but pricing isn’t released yet. All of this pricing is subject to Ministerial Approval.
In general, we don’t pay park fees here, (except for a couple of parks eg Wilson’s Prom).
Resort Entry applies to any vehicle that stops within resort boundaries, even for 5 minutes. with every car being photographed on the way in and again on the way out, there’s a time limit on just how long you can stay. For us at least, Hotham is on a major through road. Vic roads does the clearing of that road, through contractors. Entry fees pays for buses, clearing within the village, garbage collection, ski patrol, all the usual. Staff have to pay a parking charge, and their carpark is right down the road, probably too far to walk easily, with minimal buses. Lots of staff pay higher $ to have their cars in the long term car parks a bit closer to the village, whee buses are more frequent.
I am ok with the price of Kosi, too. That’s reasonable.

I go to the snow most weekends so I’ve got it figured. Wrong, yes and I should know better, but I pump enough money into the resorts down there so I don’t feel bad about it. I know their argument for exorbitant fees, but I ain’t buying it.
I agree the fee is bloody steep on top of lift tickets, accommodation, food and everything else you need to pay for up there. It probably does put people off, but judging by the crowds I see up there each year there are still plenty of people willing to pay.

The expense in VIC would pay the fuel (and park fee) to regularly travel to NSW.
I guess it’s mostly about convenience, at the end of the day that’s what we spend all our $ on.
When the public pay that amount they might be more inclined to take care of the areas, VICs NPs are closer to populated areas (on the whole) so the price may discourage scum bags from entering. It makes it more reasonable to take a from the bus from the city.
Also if Sydney siders take account what we spend in fuel for a weekend trip compared to Victorians (and the travel time) our expense at the end of a season would be closely the same.
In all it doesn’t help the Australian Snow Industry.

Really? Which resort is the furthest from Melb CBD? Isn’t it closer to 4 hours? And I think the extra time we spend on the road is at higher speed and doesn’t that usually equate to better fuel economy?
That’s a bit ridiculous, Tambo. Personally, I would be very discouraged to ever go to Hotham based on those figures. There’s no way I would pay $43.50 a day to have my car in the resort. Likewise, that annual fee seems to be crazy high. As a local, I would be pissed off and it would probably sway my decision to ride there or not.
I purchased the two-year NSW pass a year ago, so I’m OK for this season. I remember when it used to cost under $70 for the annual pass (it wasn’t even that long ago). Those were the days…

Yep I remember those days as well.
I remember when they put up the day pass considerably. The annual pass for the National Parks is good at the moment.
It is even cheaper for locals (car must be registered locally and i think you must pays rates…) and senior citizens.
Hang on I just realised that you mention staff above paying. So do they pay something to park at the shitty parking place?
All staff here in NSW get a park pass for free (but only to their resort not both/ or all) even perisher staff but you aren’t allowed to park at the resort on weekends and school holiday/peak periods. You must catch ski tube. Unless you have a paying resort customer in the car. Which i mostly do :wink, wink:
TBH - this thread has put me off ever moving to Melbourne. I have seriously considered it a few times.
But with these high costs and the perks I get in NSW resorts… well the man would have to be pretty impressive to sway me! (i have considered it for a man before… and myself but now I would never go for myself… well unless the job was amazing…)
So apparently I do have a price point!
I pay 50 a year for skitube on my season pass.. And don’t pay for any parking as its all included.. 
Those prices are crazy! We did the $50 ski tube add on for our season passes as well.
What a rip off!!!!!
And they wonder why people are savin their dollars and goin overseas!!!!!
