Question about helmet

Avatar

Ok so I know the standard certification for helmet is to take one impact and replace it. But what happen if you fall, the helmet fall, or someone hit you but it’s not a hard impact (talking about the standard 1 impact-replace helmet, not the multi impact one)? Do I still need to replace the helmet?

Technically any impact can compress the EPS foam technically reducing the effectiveness of the helmet for the next impact. Whether you actually replace it is up to you and your wallet.

You can’t always see the compression of the foam as it is covered by the shell and on the other hand it’s not like they are fragile like egg shells so it’s just a common sense thing.

I’ve had a couple of decent whacks with my EPS helmet and although I haven’t replaced it yet I will be looking at getting another one at some stage as you’re never quite sure when the next BIG impact will be.

I need my brain to function/work so to me it’s worth the money.

i think its just up to a bit of common sense, if you think the helmet has taken enough of a beating to get a new one then get a new one.
if you reckon its got a season left in it then ride it another season.

The main problem with a helmet that’s been dropped/taken a hit, is that the damage can often be unseen, as DRC Mentioned foam compressed, but also a hairline fracture can be present!!!!!

A new helmet is around the $100 mark, while a new brain is priceless!!!!!

Makes complete sense to buy one or another one even if there was a chance it was damaged. I know with my RED helmet I can send it of (at my expense) and they will assess it and say if its safe to still use but there is still some peace of mind knowing that there is no way a a new helmet will fail to perform.

I will pose this question;

Is it safer to continue riding a helmet which has taken a hit and would need replacing than riding with no helmet.

Common sense says yes

Most indubitably;

But, it most probably wont give you the same protection that you initially wanted when you first made the purchase!!!!!

Kinda like drivin a car with seat belts that are frayed, I guess!!!!!
