Last week as I picked up PinkPrincess she was bouncing out of her skin to tell me she stood on her surfboard for the first time, on a wave!
We had a full weekend and with the increase in swell and wind didn’t get the opportunity for her to show me, even nippers on Sunday was a wavy mess in the ocean pool.
PP insisted on staying an extra night so dad could take her surfing after school today, so…

After checking a few beaches settled on Thirroul as one sandbank reduced the whiter to a manageable level, nice and even waves, without a deathly dumper onto the sand like all the other beaches. She was very keen but I still thought at any stage would chicken out as we walked down the beach. I noticed all she was focused on were the size of the waves breaking out the back.

We had to have a practice on the beach to find out which leg the leggie went on and I was surprised to find out she is goofy (skates natural, looked natural on a snowboard!) but hey she wants to jump into a surfing pose goofy!! We have been surfing together before, many times (since she was old enough to hold me around the neck) but this was the first time with a leg rope with her in control.

In the water she managed so well getting the 7’ softboard over the broken waves. I helped push her over them talking her through not being intimidated and to stay on the board, once out far enough I made the call which wave to go for and would give her an extra shove, she got a few but the cross current had washed us toward a rip.

She was getting pounded on every one and said she didn’t want to go back out so we sat on the sand with the odd wave washing up to us, talking about what she sees other surfers do, how they watch waves, set intervals and practiced balance on the board when a big wash would lift her board (with her kneeling on it) off the sand. After 5-10min we gave it one last go. Didn’t go out as far this time, she was thrown off the board again but it was the best wave of the day. Falling was half expected in 2’ whitewash. I can only imagine what the 4footers out the back looked like to her.

Walked back to the car, confident and happy at taking on big surf and surviving.

Is there anyone with more stoke than me today?
yes, one person.

Mega stoked our landscaping started this week. The first part of the job includes building a retaining wall and a 4m bench seat/day bed!
