The 2012 and 2013 PYL (proto from Nidecker as opposed to GST production) are supposed to be the same. The variation might have been from inconsistant manufacturing, tuning or conditions. Everyone I’ve talked to on the 2013 GST production PYL or the team on the 2014 GST PYL really like it. The board was redesigned for GST based on DCP’s ideas of how to improve it. Tyeson Carmody (former Nitro pro who often gives feedback on models) says the new PYL is the board he’s been waiting for. It’s a charger built for going fast and staying stable in all snow conditions, especially pow. It should be better than the Greats in pow, but I guess it also comes down to preference and riding style. Romain rides the Basic, on everything from big AK lines and pillows to jumps. Benji, who’s a big guy, also rides the Basic for everything. JP was in AK on the Greats last year doing big mountain pow lines on that. You could probably Demo the new PYL through the Circle in Whistler maybe, and see if it’s the one for you.
@PDWatt: If you look at the pictures I posted in previous pages you can see the difference in the rocker of my 56 and another guy’s 59 PYL (both GST). Is it supposed to be like that or its just a little inconsistency?
well, from those photos I can see that the tail of one board is off the table surface, so it’s gonna look a bit more rockered at the tip. I looked at a bunch of boards here and they were all identical to each others length, and although it’s a bit tough to say exactly, the length to length camber/rocker looked very similar on the different lengths. Each length is molded on the same mold, and the cores are cut by a computer controlled machine, so they are pretty much identical in shape coming off assembly. The only usual variations are the placement of the graphic sheets which, placed by hand, may be a mm or so different from board to board. I can say that they are more consistant now, from GST than from before. As a board gets ridden the board will change, for sure. And a warm board has less camber than a cold one, so there’s a few things that will change it’s appearance when you look very closely.
Thanks for the clarification.
Any idea why YES downgrade the Basic base to an extruded and is it true Romain is riding the Basic with a sintered base instead? I think it’s one of the best bang for buck board in the market. Also I looked at the 2014 catalog and it mentioned the Basic has different volume for the nose and tail?
Any idea why YES downgrade the Basic base to an extruded . . .
That was a really bad decision. One of the most attractive aspects of ‘The Basic’ was that it was anything but “basic”. Now, not so much.
it’s normal for an extruded board to get the upgrade to a sintered base, not the other way around!
Posted on another thread but perhaps this thread is more appropriate.
A guy at local shop told me the MSRP for PYL next year is going to be significantly more expensive. Is there any truth to that?
The Australian RRP for the 2014 PYL is $699 - just a hundy more than The Basic. I’m pretty sure that’s exactly the same as this season?

This.
the normal dilemma is whether to get last year’s board on sale or get this year’s board at full price for the new tech.
Has the price gone down on the Basic since it has a cheaper base now?

It didn’t.
Not cool.

Yeah mate, and it gets even more tricky with the 2014 PYL - because the look of the topsheet is really polarising. Some people like the graphic but hate the wood veneer, and some vice versa. Personally, I like the graphic and don’t hate wood veneer in certain circumstances - but the graphic just doesn’t combine well with the wood veneer, so overall, it doesn’t appeal to me at all.
On a silver grey topsheet (as illustrated in the original line sheet) I like the graphic.
I agree w/ chucky. I don’t like the graphic but love the wood veneer. I think this year’s DC Mega 153.75 (Torstein’s model) has one of the best looking graphic on a wood veneer topsheet.
I don’t mind that graphic, and I generally like natural wood boards, but not so much the two together.
