Come in Nikon users (and maybe Tambazz)

Avatar

So I am thinking of buying a DSLR in the next couple of months (yeah yeah I know I have been saying this for ages now but a weekend at Chill Hill surrounded by DSLR has motivated me again!)

So anyway I had pretty much decided on a Nikon D5100.

But Tambo has throw a few more into the loop D7100 and D5200

(although I think she may have confused the D5100 with the D5200)

Also the weekend reinforced the need to take photos in low light situations without flash, so that is important to me to!

I was thinking of getting a 50mm 1.4F lens though as I may get back into food photography again (I actually am trained in food styling…) correct me if I am wrong about this as these lens are pretty pricey! But thinking of taking a lot of early morning sunrise and also sunset photos on the mountain this winter too! I need more artwork in my apartment!

And the weekend at Chill also reaffirmed that I struggle with Canon DSLR - they just feel unnatural!! (my sister loves them and I struggle with hers too!) So thats why i said Nikon user. Don’t want a PC/Apple debate here!

We have a 50mm 1.8F cost about $100. Fun little lens.

The 50mm lens are pocket rockets!

Get the 50 1.8, it’s way cheaper but still good quality.

The d7100was just announced so look for a d7000 on closeout

You wont need that lens Oz, but it’s nice glass if you can afford it.

The newest camera’s have much better low light abilities but the D600 is the best in the Nikon range for low light (and best in reviews against other brands).
Also consider if your going to use the video function of a new dslr. Still camera’s have not changed much in 5 years. Definitely look for older models (as Gamblor said) or second hand.

You need to speak to your friend about getting some of his photo’s printed wink

I’m with Azz.. canon ftw!! Hehe.. I went canon because Mr.h0zs dad used to repair canon slrs/dslrs so it was the logical choice..

But honestly they are similar… and go with what feels comfortable ( eg Nikon for you)  and I have the 50 1.8 and love it.. good light weight, small, lens

Intact I liked it enough to get the 28 2.8 aswell.. ( for a wider angle with the lower f stop)

I didn’t even try to change Ozzy’s mind. She’s just way happier with the Nikon, and that’s that. Having a plethora here for her to pick up and play with it was like watching Azz on skis when she picked up the Canon. So…there you go. But then my lovely husband decided that he might unload one of our cameras so we can get a new one. I’m still pretty happy with the 7D. Think I’d rather have the 24-70 2.8 lens.

The only good advice I’ve heard in regard too Nikon Vs Canon is; choose the brand all your friends have - so you can borrow lenses.

teacherboy

I HAVE!!!!!!!!

Okay I have found the difference between the 5100 and the 5200 - mainly the price!

I think if I was was going to pick up a bargain it will either be the 5100 or the 7000 (thanks for the tip Gamblor!)

Speaking of sales I saw in Harvey Norman yesterday http://www.harveynorman.com.au/nikon-d5100-dslr-twin-lens-kit.html

Not the most ideal lenses but CHEAP!

nikon FTW.

the 50f is great
When traveling i only took that lens and it was great for nearly everything.

i have recently purchased the Tamron 17-55 2.8
i love it as a lens, nice and wide and 2.8 through is good.

Im running a D90 which is good but it really struggles at low light with high ISO
i only push it to 800 if i really have to.

i would love to try out the new 7100

i dont know much about the 5100 or5200 but they seem pretty good value for money.

the only advice I would give is…. buy the brand opposite to what your friends have so they don’t borrow your lenses tongue wink

It was pretty funny… Buutttt Muuuuummmmmm why wont it do what I want it to doooo!!!!!! :stompsofftofindthenikon:

But then my sister gets frustrated with me too when she hands me the Canon when she wants me to take happy snaps at the kids birthday parties and is otherwise occupided. She ususually gets feed up with the questions and takes the camera back!

I’m also pro Canon. I got it because my sister and her boyfriend both had Canon’s and showed me the basics. The Nikon feels unnatural to me.

Though I’m less passionate about this debate than Apple / PC lol.

This one is the one I got: http://www.harveynorman.com.au/canon-eos-600d-camera-with-18-55mm-55-250mm-lenses.html

Main benefit is that the larger lens has a better zoom. Otherwise they are very similar.
