I’m not sure if I told you guys, but I’m going back to “school” this year, doing a graphic design course at Shillington College. It’s a part time course on Wednesday and Thursday nights, ending at the end of the year. I started last night and I’m really excited to get stuck into it. The teachers are awesome and the studio is sick. It seems like it’s going to be really chilled and informal, which is definitely my style anyway.
This is the college if anyone is interested: http://www.shillingtoncollege.com.au/
I will try to update this thread with pieces of work and anything interesting we are working on.
Who’s else is currently studying at school, college or university? What are you studying?
I’m not as of yet.. Currently a department manager in a supermarket.. But by the and of this year I am looking to go back to just full time and study photography online, ( or possibly 1-2 days at tafe etc) never could make up my mind what I wanted to do, so I just progressed in the job I already had.. But I keep going back to photography.. So I figured, why not give it a go.
That’s awesome Jez!
I would love to do a photography course, but the one I want to do is 2 years full time. Boo.
The only course I will be doing soon is in SharePoint (boring!)
Back to school!
I’m thinking of heading back to Uni next year. BA Media/Comm. is right up there as an option at the moment. Looking at doing a few graphic design units as well.
Was contemplating doing a diploma in construction management (or whatever the hell it is called) to supplement my Builders Licence but…screw going to uni!
good to hear your doing something productive jez!! i kid i kid
i did a year of photography and digital media at tafe part time a couple of years ago
Currently doing my 3rd and final year at tafe in refrigeration & air-conditioning (also know as HVAC), cant wait to be finished!
I’ve considered going to tafe and learn to weld properly.
I mentioned to you before h0z - photography courses are a waist of money (except that you might make some good contacts). Mind you I’ve never done a photography course!
I did do a digital video course but the teaches knew less than me about it, though I did meet a guy who employed me for 10 years as an editor in the snow!
I’m not a good student generally. I could do with doing learning marketing and management skills but ha! I don’t have time for that and I would ultimately fail, it would just be to pick up any skills along the way.
Im currently back at school at the Australian Maritime College in Tassie studying an Integrated Rating course.. (what the hell is an integrated rating you ask??)
Well as i come from a super yachting background overseas i thought it would be a good idea to finally come home after 3 years of that and look into the commercial shipping industry more so the oil and gas tenders that hang off the oil rigs in WA. Th ise IR course an entry level deckhand course for commercial ships such as bulk carriers, cargo vessels, oil tankers or any other big ships you’ve seen sailing down the east or west coasts of aus.. And no i will not be getting a job with the Costa Concordia crew or the Pasha Bulker! Haha! For those of you who don’t remember the PB it was the big tanker that ran around in Newcastle a number of years back…
Anyhoo, anyone looking for a career at sea i can recommend super yachts, or white boats as they are more commonly known for all the glitz and glamor and a bit of a inside scoop on life styles of the rich and famous.. For those wishing to get their hands dirty theres the Integrated Rating course….

Happy sailing!
Yeh.. I just need the paper that says I can.. which is more why I’m considering online so I can do it in my own time..
Management and marketing I’m fine with.. my department at work is one of the only ones that’s consistently trading up on last year ( about 4% on average) and I’m usually saving on wages too.. (but that’s a supermarket.. although I suppose the skills can be transferred to almost anything)
As my boss says I’m good at what I do and I give is 100% but my heart just isn’t in it.. (I’ve had many conversations with him about going and studying.. he always says.. do what you love and what makes you happy..) - really glad I have him as my boss..
Surferguy56, my ex ( only one I’m still good friends with) is in the merchant navy and he loves it!! His working his way up to captain.. he’s always been around boats ( his house backs onto water and his dad is into sailing) his on pretty decent money too, and now does 6 weeks at sea, then 6 weeks off.. not a bad deal..
A friend of mine worked on yachts in the Caribbean, she loved it! but said it was hectic hard work
. . . photography courses are a waist of money . . .
Sew are spelling lessons.
h0z.. Yeah a life at sea is pretty good.. The 6 on 6 off is super sweet as well, its how the oil and gas tenders run too.. Hence why i got out of yachting, you can get paid a great yearly salary but only work 6 months of the year for it. Winning! Just need to get this course outta the way!!!
Deanobruce.. Yeah ive done the caribbean a few times its pretty ball busting work, but at the same time there’s a lot of perks that come with the job.. Free travel, tax free $$$, use of the jet ski’s and tenders onboard, no living expenses to name a few, if you like the sound of all that, maybe look further into it
but that’s a supermarket.. although I suppose the skills can be transferred to almost anything
both my mum and dad managed supermarkets for years, they would be sent to the not so efficient or good stores to get them running better and increase profitability. my dad now runs his own online based business selling radiator guards & accessories for road bikes all over the world (radguard.com.au). he travels to china, hong kong, thialand quiet regularly now and when he’s not travelling he spends alot of his time on track bikes and dirt bikes. he would not have the experience or knowledge required to get where he is today without his days in supermarkets

Sew are spelling lessons.
Come to my classroom, kids!
. . . photography courses are a waist of money . . .
So are spelling lessons.
This is why I would fail.
But I’m good at editing others work!
