Park board: wide or not?

Hey guys!

I’m looking for a new board purely for the park.  I currently ride a 162 Head transit which is due for an upgrade smile  I’m 6’3, 87kg and wear a US 11 boot.  I’ve done a bit of riding, Canada (3 months), Austria (2 months) and trips to NZ and Japan.

I want to drop 3-5cm at least and have been looking at the K2 parkstar 159 and 157 (maybe too small?) and am wondering whether i can get away without getting a wide board and if i do get a wide board will it affect my rail transitions and riding in general?

I’ve read a few reviews of bigger guys riding the 157W and saying it doesn’t feel like a wide board at all?  Any info on whether i need to ride a wider board, effects of riding a wider board and any other board recommendations would be sweet!!

Cheers

This 2014 YES Jackpot would be perfect for you!

You do NOT need a wide board for size 11 feet. A regular 158 YES Jackpot would be perfect for you. The waist width is 255mm, which is more than enough for even the chunkiest size 11 boots.

Why buy a snowboard from a ski company (K2) when there are plenty of great options on offer from genuine snowboard companies?

If you end up with a wide board, don’t worry - it will be ever so slightly slower edge to edge but you won’t notice it any longer than the first run. I have a 156MW that I used to ride in the park - and I have tiny feet. A wider board will be more stable on rails. For these reasons, focus more on the board length you want than the waist width.

You should be able to get on the 157 for sure.

The Parkstar is a good board and after knowing a few people who have ridden it in the past it’s a good option. But first think about the style of park riding you want to do and choose an appropriate camber type first, flex and then size of board. Depending on how small you want to go you could get on the 154w Parkstar.

Avoid Yes boards, they are awful.

Meh, one comment stems from rational logic, the other from ignorant conjecture (and is obviously a feeble attempt at trolling). Any intelligent person can differentiate between the two, so why bother taking it any further?

Oh, sorry, yeah… I thought we were spreading mindless propaganda about snowboard company’s so I just joined in.

Yeah, k2 have only been making snowboards for 25 years…would rather support a company with what? 3 years of questionable quality

YES, I would.

So what if a ski company has been cashing in on snowboarding “for 25 years” - they’re STILL a ski company, and THAT is their primary focus. Well, making money for Jarden Corporation’s shareholders is K2’s primary focus - and whatever money that doesn’t go into lining their shareholders’ pockets may potentially go into R&D for not only their main ski brands, but any number of their many other companies, like Sunbeam appliances, for example.

It shouldn’t take a genius to understand that in order for quality to improve, smaller snowboard companies need your SUPPORT.

Yes only came about because Nidecker wanted to push their boards onto the younger generation and make themselves more marketable.

Also, you’re the only one who believes k2 to be “cashing in”. I’d say over 25 years of solid production and tech, and support within the industry proves they are “Cashing in” no more than Burton, Rome or Yes are. There is no “rational logic” in thinking that there is any one company in this industry who are not here for the profits, or that K2 has contributed less to this sport than anyone else.

In order for quality to improve I have to buy their gear? But why buy their inferior quality when I know another brand’s quality is already at a competent level, such as k2?
I mean really, give me one thing YES have done for this industry better than any other company except picking up a bunch of high profile disowned pros to help push their name.

Don’t get me wrong, I have nothing against YES Snowboards, they have some great products, but holy shit we’re over 30 years into this sport and people think a well established brand is just here to leech profits from the industry merely because skiing came first and that’s where they started? Guess what, Flux started out in car parts - I guess they are just here for the profits too huh? Better boycott those bindings from now on right?
