the Devo thread!!

haha lmgtfy is a mad site for making people rage when they ask you questions you’d just google smile.

One of my mates changed the engine in his Ford Focus in his parents driveway and works in IT. It’s definitely do-able.

On the other hand, I can charge $100 for an hour of looking into IT problems for people.

Haha AJ - thanks!

Yeah my dad could probably do it but i would have to drive it to him (Jindy)

But you have given me another idea - a certain snowboard instructor on this site was a mechanic in a past life and when he gets back to aus before the next season maybe he would be keen for some cash work! Worth asking!

Anyway I just picked up the car and there is some better news. The final bill was $749 so a hundred dollars cheaper (and I added something to it after the first quote) I had a tire which had a nail in that I wanted repaired.

He also has given me more instructions, in addition to no freeway driving and no flooring it at the lights. Which should give me a couple of months (which is what i need) and made a joke about how i might get a job in Ryde and have to drive to work everyday (instead of public transport) and he said to be honest driving 30km a day is not going to make that much difference.

So feeling much better!

Oh and he said that if he just did timing belt and water pump and none of the other stuff normally required at that service it could come in around $500.

When i got the Imprezza (those playing along at home the car being discussed above is an Outback) I had decide i was going to have all the services done by a mechanic to keep up the impeccable service history but since the current car has nadda then what’s the point. I can take up the offer of my BIL or Dad doing minor services etc and mechanic for the big or difficult stuff.

I can replace the timing belt Oz!
But you would have to get the car out to me (driving the M5 or alternate) and it would need to be when I have free time.
I would also need to get a service manual (about $50), parts (timing belt, gasket kit) and a couple of days to do it.

There could be other hidden problems (caused by the worn timing belt) - it puts stress on many other parts, like EVERYTHING on the engine! This is my concern about you continuing to drive it. No doubt the mechanic is stoked because when you return to get the belt done he’ll have a long list of other parts that need replacing with the reasoning “you drove it with a worn timming belt”.

Option #2 replacement engine - these come with 12 month warranty (allows for 3rd party installation) and is basically a new engine (0km on full rebuild)
More costly than just doing the timing belt but with all the engines Subaru produce you can increase performance while using a larger/better stock engine.
Cause I’m sure that engine has seen a few days of abuse by the previous owner (based on the stickers).

Option #3 second hand engine.
With so many subaru’s, plenty end up in junk yards through being driven badley/stolen/impounded/crashed… Etc
It’s likely we could find a cheap engine for less than the cost for a mechanic to do the timming belt. Installation is easy.(a mechanic would charge for +15hrs labour even though it should take him half that time).

Wife was involved in car accident last night.  Nobody hurt.  Car is fairly likely to be written off, waiting on confirmation.  Time to go car shopping.

That sux Muddy, glad everyone is OK.

At the end of the day, its far better to replace a car than have someone hurt or worse.

thanks, Azz.  Definitely glad nobody was hurt.  The subie was a good car, not sure what we’ll get next.  Thinking maybe Subie Outback or new Foz.

thanks, mate.  It was quite a shunt and must have been a hell of a shock for all involved.

Yep.. Car accidents can really shake you up.. I didn’t get my licence for almost 3 years after I was in a fairly bad one.. Luckly the injuries weren’t to bad..

Very glad to hear everyone is ok.. As that’s always the most important thing.. Cars can always be replaced..
