Drug pushers use 20% more space than what society has a need for.

Hahaha I’ll accept that as a reasonable answer..

Devo the Bogan Beast is a bit of a money drain!

I drove down the coast for Aus Day and felt the car wasn’t running quite right my BIL, Mizu and Azz all told me I was being paranoid (admittedly I was thinking it was the timing belt)

turns out it wasn’t running well as it became a bit sick driving it 3km the other day.

the coil is gone (and a couple of other things in the area were damaged) and so i was basically drove 8 hrs on like 3 cylinders…

$850 later and I am getting my car back this afternoon but they checked the timing belt and it is really worn… as in “shit you shouldn’t be driving it” worn.

But I am going to baby it til May and hopefully save the 1k to do the timing belt before winter.

Yes I am spending a lot of money on the car but in reality it is cheaper then buying a new car (which could have stuff wrong with it as well)

Oh and Dylan teacherboy (but you knew that!)

Oz, do the timing belt now, just do it, you have been told.

Whose lending me the money then?

I can barely afford the $850 today let alone $1850.

In an ideal world I would do that but I just don’t live in Lala land.

When i explained the little driving i do in summer (before my trips to the snow i was barely doing 5,000k a year and i didn’t live as close to the city) he relaxed a bit and just told me no freeway driving.

As long as you understand the risk and results of the timing belt snapping while driving. Not only can it be incredibly inconvenient (causing a traffic jam, car out of action for a while) expensive (depending on the engine it can cause some major EXPENSIVE damage) it could also be potentially dangerous if it causes an accident.

Who knows how bad it is though. It’s strange that a responsible mechanic would let you continue on a “shit you shouldn’t be driving it” timing belt.

I understand the risks. I do realise that I am risking losing the car completely. But besides the snow I can live without a car I have done it before and I can do it again.

But I reinterate it is the choice of a timing belt or paying my mortgage… Thats the reality.

To be fair the mechanic told me I should do it (that was his words you did quote) but when I explained the minimal driving I do he realised the risk was significantly less.

But a worn timing belt is not unroadworthy so there is nothing he can do.

As rip offs go, mechanics sit up there pretty high; somewhere between vacuum cleaner salesmen and panel beaters.

Not sure what car you have but the parts should come in at about $150: http://bit.ly/11RVtlU

Not suggesting you tackle it yourself, but if you have mate who is even half way competent on a spanner it aint that hard: http://bit.ly/11RV7fc
