The Last Couple of Days (now with POV for Dylan ha ha)

Some pics and vid of my last couple of days, a bushwalk surf trip yesterday arvo and a 4.5 hour session out at my local reef.  Good times!

you should mount the cam to your board and get some footage

Ok so for Dylans sake I spent some time today and rigged up a POV mount for the board.  I can’t guarantee it wont make you sick but it’s here anyways.  Surf wasn’t very good or anywhere near as big as yesterday unfortunately but might give you an idea of what’s it’s like being a surfboard ha ha!  Watch it in 720p for best results.

I love that footage. Mixed with the other footage you have it would make a great little vid shaka

Glad you like it Azz, it’s very different seeing every wave you caught in a surf like that but kinda cool as well.  Here’s a couple of pics of the board with the camera on it.  The first wave I got I went off a double up where the wave was going over a shallow rock and did an ollie, when the the board lands the click in part of the mount couldn’t handle the jolt and the cam came out of the front.  This validates the piece of coat hanger wire I glassed into the board to function as a cam leash attachment point should the worst happen as it did on the very first wave.  Kinda made me a little more careful in terms of what I was doing as well.

Haha, I thought I saw a rock at surface level and thought, no way would you surf close to a rock, must be weed.

Then I got distracted by the camera doing a dance on the end of its safety string smile

Loving the POV footage mate. That coat hanger attachment is awesome. Mind telling me how you attached it exactly? Very smart move.

Azz it was dead low tide so plenty of rocks around but they don’t generally break the surface they just boil and suck out the waves and create extra lips which is what I rode over and landed again to create that jolt.  I kinda like the fact the rocks are there as it generally means that not too many other people want a bar of it.  If you come off on top of one you’ll know all about it though.

Jez I got a coat hanger and two pairs of pliers.  I then cut one end of the straight of the coat hanger, folded it up into the shape I wanted and then cut the other end to length to end up with something that looks like this, please excuse the bad drawing.

I then made two small 5mm diameter holes in the board with a drill, I filled the holes with solarez and then inserted the bent wire into the holes with the two tail bits entering in first.  Then I twisted the wire so the tails dug into the surrounding foam, cleaned up the tops of the holes to make sure they were sealed then put it in the sun for 10mins, sanded it back a little and job done.

TBH I think it would be a better bet to put a legrope plug in, as small a risk as it may be, having a bit of wire above the deck could cause an injury if you slid across it.

Thanks mate, well done.

good job keeping the lens clear - did you do anything special eg. rain-x?

I just lick it as gross as that sounds, one good lick at the start of the surf and good to go!
