did thrift shop really get no.1 ? ???
The very first ‘Hottest 100’ was SUPPOSED to be the best of all time (well, up to that point, obviously) - but predictably, most people just voted for their favourite songs of the moment.
I’m pretty sure they had to make it best of the year because joy division was coming number 1 every year.
Haha, yeah, Love Will Tear us Apart did rate highly - only edged out by Nirvana in the third one I think? Perhaps that was the turning point? Sure, Smells Like Teen Spirit is a good song - but it had only been released that year.
Still, some songs that have probably only featured once in a top 100 (not too long after their initial release) do rank highly in my “all time” list - Lock It by the Falling Joys, for example.
