New Zealand 2013 Wanaka/Queenstown

If you can, avoid hire gear if you can afford it.  Torpedo 7 would probably have a board that would work for you for similar price as hiring.

As far as where to go and where to board, I have flown CChurch and QT, Cchurch was a pretty big mission to get to QT after the flight but good if you want to ride Hutt or the club fields.  For the extra coin if you’re going to QT only just fly there, it works out cheaper in the end.  First time I stayed in QT and then Methven on the way back to CChurch, second time flew into QT and stayed in the Wanaka Hotel, I’m a little older (34 now) so really didn’t care about partying, that all changed when our flight outta QT got canned and the airline put us up in QT for the night.  That next day was one of my more solid hangovers I’ve ever had ha ha!

TR’s from my trips for reference/info etc

If you’re staying with a group - look into hiring a holiday house through that website I linked to on the first page. Can get a sweet house to yourselves for cheap!

So flights are booked. Brisbane to Christchurch Fri 02, Queenstown to Brisbane Wed 14. Will definitely be in Queenstown from 7th to 14th. Most likely renting a house or something similar with a group of mates. Before that though will be in between Mt Hutt/Ohau/Wanaka so thank you for the suggestions. (flights were $169 each way btw. doesnt include baggage which was $25 for 1 bag up to 23kg but I travel a lot so I get free baggage woot!).

Am going to hold on booking accom etc until numbers of the group get finalised. But am open to hotel etc suggestions for Mt Hutt/Ohau/Wanaka. Will only be staying for 1/2 nights at each place max.

I will probably end up buying a new board, only because hire would end up costing me around $250 give or take for 8/9 days and I do plan on boarding each year so I figure why not. Will only need to buy board/bindings since I have boots and clothing already.

I did start a board thread in the equipment section so please feel free to comment.

hey bkrton, not sure if it’s been covered yet. But virgin’s sale flights to NZ finish tonight (Thursday 10th Jan) at midnight. This will probably be Sydney time (AEDST) so adjust accordingly for your timezone if you don’t want to miss out.

I worked at tc for a season and saw too many rentals coming up that were either srtup incorrectly or broke. Hire from racers edge in wanaka. They are the only people I always trusted.

Time to get some pennies up .... I’m getting really itchy to ride.

Would June 19-25th be a good time to ride?

I’d recommend going later in the season to be sure (late july/early august) you will get decent conditions. But with anything in nature, it can vary dramatically season to season

I’d say it is way too early for there to be guaranteed snow. Year before last there was no snow at all until the start of july & all the resorts opened late.

I know one can’t fully predict what nature will do. But how rare of an occasion was that? It’s just that I’ve already booked flights for this time. Is it a big risk or a small risk?

If there’s no snow I’ll do other things, it is Queenstown after all… but I’d much prefer to bomb the hills!

Treble Cone Didn’t even open until June 25th this season if I remember correctly, and Cardrona only opened June 24th with barely any snow. Those dates are literally the very first days of the season, depending on how things go, the season could easily be delayed until early July.

I’d be leaning more towards a bigger risk there, but hopefully you’ll get lucky and it will be an early season.

I’m a bit late back here… but go to Fyve’s website and pick up a board from them. $200 for a board is cheap as and the brand is quality.

Then just find some cheap bindings since you don’t need super fancy ones if you don’t know what you like.

Best thing you can do is get your own boots though. Rentals are disgustingly dirty and generally don’t fit your foot well. You’re going to do 10 odd days of hiring.
http://www.victoriaskisport.co.nz/rentals.html wants $142 for 10 days for a board and boots.

If you get your own board, it lasts seasons and therefore counteracts the $150ish per year you spend on rentals.
