Burton AK 2L Cyclic Question

Avatar

Possibly looking at one of these.  So the Stagger is insulated?  Surely that would make the Cyclic a better pick for Aussie conditions?  How small do these pack down?  I may use them while commuting on rainy days too, but don’t want some huge lump in my bag (that sure sounds wrong..)

I’ve done close to 20 days with the 2013 Cyclic and it is a fantastic jacket. The zipper catches a little bit but you get used to it and figure out the ideal way to zip up the top. Plenty of very good pockets, apart from the top one on the chest. Don’t use it, it zips upwards so it opens up as you move. The side ones are sweet though, plus you always have your pants pockets and the one on the inside if you need more space.

Anyone have both the Cyclic and the Stagger? I want an insulated jacket for slightly colder days and one I can throw on with a t-shirt when walking around the village too. Is there enough difference in warmth to warrant a purchase?
Stagger seems to be a good choice. Looked at the Arcteryx gear and while it’s awesome, I’m not keen on paying $200 more for one. Any good North Face equivalents?

Rider - I remember you mentioned in another thread that the Stagger actually has quite light insulation, maybe the Highland is a better choice? Looks better too. I should go search what sort of insulation that has…
EDIT - Stagger is 40G with shell arms. Highland is 40G in the hood & armpits, 60G everywhere else. Leaning towards the Highland now.

ps. Gore-Tex is incredible, I understand the hype. I feel like I could go for a swim in my Cyclic jacket and Stagger pants and probably still stay dry lol.

i have both the cyclic and the stagger. the insulation, like you’ve discovered, is negligible.

no, the cyclic does not pack down very well. it does make a sick around town jacket though (if you have a fleece /light down under it)

I went with the Highland, such a sick jacket and colour! That one will keep me toasty warm.

The Stagger is (very) slightly insulated in the chest and back. Honestly feels like a shell. It’s a great jacket but it wouldn’t be my pick for Australia, because of the minimal insulation. Even the smallest bit of insulation is too much during the Aussie spring, in my opinion. It doesn’t pack great either. That said, it’s the perfect jacket for mid-season overseas shredding.

Old men have the best style. It’s why they are always in suits.
