spaz’s idea of Xmas fun

Avatar

With all the heat leading up to Xmas our dam dried out. I hired a excavator to clear out the sludge.

Here’s the dam on Xmas Eve.

Spent Christmas Day operating the excavator in an empty dam, while heavy rain begins and you can see streams of water coming from all direction makes for a challenge.
I came close to becoming part of the nutrient rich sludge when the excavator slid in sideways, almost toppling over and burying me in 6’ of thick heavy mud.

Took this photo after I stopped it sinking by pushing the hydraulic grader and bucket into the sludge.

The mutt was impressed with my digging prowess and mud playing skills so joined in. She was’nt so impressed by not being let inside or the cleaning process.

It didn’t take long to fill the trench I had dug - not that it stopped me digging.

How it looks this morning.

Would be a big dam for that to get bogged. I wouldn’t even need to to go past the fence line! Just reach over it - and it would only take 2 bucket loads to empty my dam but where’s the fun in that? mind you it would cost a hefty fee for an hour, and there’s the whole closing the roads for delivery thing…

Hey Spaz ....you should stock your dam with native fish. I can help you catch some if you want!

What sort of native fish would you recommend crackers?

We have a little dam at Chill Hill.

We tried that but it attracted birds that would eat them. I spent weeks throwing rocks and golf balls at the bird but it only left when the fish ran out. Don’t know if the turtles eat fish but we had up to 14 snake necked turtles living in their this year.

Photo of turtle later:

Todays progress after getting a bigger excavator. The biggest they had alright Azz!

I now have sunburnt knees.

PP escaped such sunburn the old fashioned way.

Here is one of the turtles - 3 months ago. I caught this one making a run for it, must’ve known the water was on the decline.

We also have a few species of frogs including ‘screaming frogs’, snakes (black and brown), rabbits and a fox who regularly visit the dam.
I’m trying to create an island in the center for ducks and geese to escape the fox, we had up to 20 geese and a few ducks until the fox slowly picked them off.

Since my mutt has gotten older I haven’t seen the fox.
