Just wondering about what effects the specs of effective edge and sidecut radius have on how a board rides?
E.g. If one board has an effective edge of 1173cm and the other board an EE of 1130cm…where will the difference be felt & will it be a lot? If the EE was 1160 instead, would that be enough to significantly diminish whatever effect it has?
and the same question for sidecut radius? 8.9m vs 7.45m…..or 8.9m vs 7.6m?
Just trying to compare the specs of a board I have ridden and liked, with another potential new board in its two different size options. Unfortunately, the new board I’m keen for is only available in sizes that are 1cm shorter than I’d normally be happy with, or 1cm longer than I’d normally be happy with
Sorry if none of that makes sense! lol
some info here.
I would very much doubt that you’d notice a board being 1cm too short or too long.
Longer EE = board gonna feel longer, e.g. rides like a longer board relative to its size
shorter EE = board gonna feel shorter
tighter side cut = board’s gonna turn tighter, likes to turn, maybe a bit twitchy if you straight line. One of the tightest sidecut board I’ve tried is the sherlock, which is the only part of it I don’t like.
mellow side cut = longer more drawn out turns, “better” for going fast, open bowls, etc. (rider still makes the difference most of the time, hence the “better”)
Yeah, basically the Effective Edge is the part that has contact with the snow when it’s turning, so the longer the edge, the longer or harder it will take to turn!!!!!
*However, this can be altered by the Profile of the board though!!!!! ie A CamRock style board will have a “reduced” feel to it’s effective edge because it’s cambered section of the Effective Edge ends sooner than a full Cambered boards!!!!!
In regards to Sidecut, the deeper the side cut (smaller radius), will make the boards ability to turn in smaller arcs increase, and the opposite for a Shallower Sidecut!!!!!
Deeper Sidecuts are more suited to Freestyle, where Shallower are more suited to Freeride!!!!!
*Flex Pattern, along with Nose/Tail Shape will also alter the way a board behaves!!!!!
Hope that didn’t confuse you even more, but there’s so many factors that combine to give any one board it’s unique characteristics, and this is why it truly is best to test ride first if ya can?????

So are you saying the Camrock boards have a shorter effective edge than an equivalent cambered board as the tips are rockered up off the snow, or that it’s the same but with less feel as the rocker is still pressing on the snow but more lightly?

This!!!!!
Much like a Full Rockered Board compared to a Full Cambered Board!!!!!
They can have exactly the same Effective Edge (And sidecut for that matter), yet the feel of the board when engaging that edge will be completely different due solely to the profile!!!!!
Ok thanks for that help, guys!
I dunno why I was so cryptic with the comparisons. I’m trying to find a board similar to freddy’s Arbor Draft (150cm). I’m super keen to try Bataleon and TBT and quite keen on the Airobic (after ruling the Evil Twin out for being too stiff & the Distortia for being too soft & narrow). However the Airobic only comes in a 148 or a 151 and my current board is a 149.
I’m not that keen on going a cm down to a 148, as I’m already quite a bit heavier than the suggested weight limit for my board (15 odd kg)...and going 2cm longer up to a 151 feels like a big jump, as I want to keep the feel nice and skatey. Maybe I wouldn’t really notice that though and its all in my head??
Here are the comparisons with those specs.
EE Arbor Draft 150cm = 1173 (it has the wavy edges, magentraction style so I think that is why that number is so big compared to the others?
Airobic 148cm = 1130
Airobic 151cm = 1160
Sidecut radius Draft 150cm = 8.9
Airobic 148 = 7.45
Airobic 151 = 7.6
Everyone talks about the draft as being one of the softest, jibbery, buttery boards around & it is a full reverse camber with one of the biggest banana shapes out there, I think….but Freddy still has no trouble carving, straightlining and whatnot.
His Draft seems to have by far the longest EE (13cm longer than the Airobic which is a 1cm longer board) but it isn’t at all difficult to turn. Is that the magnetraction stuff confusing things though?
The draft also has a much shallower sidecut than the other two boards? (so would make it more suited to freeride than the others? Is that actually possible?)
Just had a quick look at the Airobic then, and although its a TBT, it’s a cambered board!!!!!
This would explain it bein “stiffer”, more ridged in feel, when carving more so than lack of Magnetraction!!!!! And therefore explain the easier “turnability” of the Draft!!!!!
Like I said before, once the profile changes rocker/camber/hybrid/TBT, it’s then difficult to compare a boards characteristics using only side cut and effective edge stats!!!!!
yep ok, roger that. That makes perfect sense. It seems I got bogged down in the detail and couldn’t see the obvious! Of course a camber and a reverse camber will ride differently.
It seems like the Airobic is still marketed as quite a playful board though, especially as far as cambered boards go?
Yeah, the TBT will make it as catch free as you can get when it’s ridden flat!!!!! Although when you need control, the cambered profile gives it perfectly!!!!!
So in theory (and as they claim it to be) it would make for a great park board!!!!!
I guess I need to figure out if I can get over the mental block of not wanting to go up to a 151. I rode my Omatic Sweet at 150cm very happily though, so 1cm up from that can’t be too bad, surely!...but it’d be going up 2cm at once, as I’m currently on a 149. I don’t want it to feel like a boat!
What’s the profile of your current board?????
Nitro’s Gullwing Hybrid camber (reverse camber between bindings, regular camber from the bindings out to the nose and tail)
hahaha yes exactly, mr rad pants. I’m not so bright!
