I know we have already opted out of the test events, coming from Australia, it’s over $3000 return to get to Russia! Thats a once in a lifetime option for me and I’m not wasting it on test events lol.

They have also stated that our interview will take place in December and that Ozgirl has already passed the basic tests to get the interview (and they will contact her as such). I have had all the same communication so I am just waiting as well (apart from the confirmation which was extra communication I didn’t go into). If nothing happens in December I’ll start following it up smile.

Super pumped and 2013 can’t come and go quick enough if I get accepted!

That is lot of cash, and I wouldn’t consider the test events either if I had to pay that.  From Fort Lauderdale or Miami Florida, roundtrip tickets are under $1000 US for April flights.  For that price, I figure what the hell if I get picked for it.

I’m another one that found the thread via a web search.

I also applied, and hopefully have an interview (tomorrow) via Skype. I say hopefully because I was scheduled back in September and didn’t receive the Skype connection information. Anyway, they rescheduled for tomorrow so we’ll see if I get it this time.

I volunteered in Sport at the Vancouver 2010 Olympics (and now for Sochi), though in a non alpine event, and it was mandatory for me to attend the test event. A friend who also volunteered at Vancouver was part of the downhill course crew and also was required to attend the test event in order to be selected. Not sure if it’ll be the same in Sochi, but it could be.

I’m hoping if I get selected, because I’ve already volunteered at an Olympics (and numerous World Cups), I won’t be required for the test event in order to be selected for the big show. As with the Australian costs, it might be too pricey from western Canada.

I’m interested in hearing others continued journey through this interesting process. Oh and as far as that 80% selected already, I wouldn’t be too concerned. I didn’t officially hear I was accepted for Vancouver until Fall 2009 (about 5 or so months before the Games began), and I heard others weren’t selected until the very end of 2009. It all depends on which of the 20000 of 25000 positions they filled.

“Rob Tactic” I like that! Haha! Well, I finally decided to take matters into my own hands so I stated calling every phone number I could find regarding Sochi Volunteers. After many attempts (and phone hang up’s from the other side)  I was finally able to speak to someone who could assist! I spoke to one of the volunteer managers and asked if I could set up an interview with her rather than wait and go online and wait some more…  Well, the good news is that she agreed and I have a confirmed appointment on Monday morning!

If you would like her direct line please send me an email or PM and I’ll give it to you. I’m sure she wouldn’t want 10,000,000 people calling her direct line with questions!

Also, I inquired about the “test events” and was told that there is a great need for people who have an interest in working Alpine Skiing events. (Pick me! Pick me!) Apparently there is a great need for international volunteers who are interested and are available to work the test events.

Remember, when we all finally meet in Sochi, the first round is on me! Thanks again to everyone for sharing their information about this wonderful journey we are about to undertake!

Well done you!

I leave the country in 4 days so I have pretty much ran out of time so I think I will just have to wait and see :-(

I’ll give it a bit longer on the email approach. It’s pretty close to christmas and I’ll try to sort it soon.

+ I can’t do the test events… :(

Don’t give up. From my understanding they are still desperate to fill volunteer positions. Basically from what I heard is a huge chunk of the 5000 remaining positions they need to fill are for Alpine events, and they are looking mainly at foreign volunteers for this.

I applied for a non-alpine sport position and during my interview they were completely directing the interview towards getting me an Alpine position (asked if I would be willing to bring my “equipment”, aka skis etc, with me for the Test Event).

I guess I asked too many questions and the young lady interviewing me brought in her supervisor. He ended up looking over my application and put me in touch directly with the Sport chairperson. So we’ll see how that goes.

I agree with using the “Rob Tactic”, being proactive could really be the difference and may get you noticed (otherwise your application could easily get lost in the “crowd”).

Good things to hear Rob and Learning.  I’m in Canada visiting family, but after the holidays I will also employ the “Rob tactic”, haha! Unfortunately, I don’t ski, or I’d offer alpine to them as well.

Still crossing fingers for hockey test invite in April!

If they take snowboarders, I’d happily be an Alpine staff. TBH, I could probably beat most beginner -> average skiiers even after I strap in raspberry

I would be perfect for Alpine!! Would be stoked to do it… Hmm wonder if I should change my preference on my application to Alpine!!

I sent another email last night telling them when and where I would be away and that I would still be available via skype.

Probably just better to keep annoying them for now smile.

Woot!

Finally got an offer to pick a time for interview!

I sent another email the other day (so 2 in the last week) and i actually just amended my application to sport! No idea if that helped.

The manager just emailed me and said pick any date and time after 10th Jan and that I can let her know via return email not the site.

There is actually 2 mins between the email that confirmed my change on my application and the Manger (elena) emailing me.

Hey Oz,

It probably didn’t change anything as I got the exact same email from Elena.

I replied with availability between 11am and 4pm their time (6pm-11pm ours) and asked for a time (but said to let me know if they wanted a different time.)

STOKED!
