I really REALLY cant decide

I like the look of the Amarok, second only to the new Ranger IMO and it gets good wraps as an urban 4wd with reasonable offroad ability.  I’m kinda contemplating a new car for tax reasons again, I think I will be better off in net terms come tax time etc.  Not sure on a brand spanker but might go 12 months old and one of the reasons I haven’t really considered the Amarok is the upfront purchase price is pretty steep IMO for unproven, untested vehicle and the historically horrible service and repair costs.  I would be very keen if buying a Rok to have it under warranty as forking out for repairs might frighten me a little I think.

From memory they have just brought out the auto version with an 8speed box, was another reason I didn’t consider them apart from price was the fact if I had to travel slowly I couldn’t be bothered changing the gears myself, not much of a bathurst fantasy with a diesel soundtrack and 0-100kmh time approaching double digits in seconds.

Does yours have low range Azz?  I find the Rok range really damn confusing they mix and match specs across them all over the place!

Dyldo I have a new and improved idea, buy this and just take the “Turbo” badge off with a hairdryer to avoid unwanted attention….........

^^^ what about the insurance costs?

Particularly with the turbo mentioned above? Not sure taking the badge off will help with that!

I recommend running a couple of your choices through a quote for insurance which may change your mind…

Also whats with this P-plater approve in some of the car ads?

Oz I’m taking the piss, he’s not allowed to drive a turbo or V8 as the govt deems him to be incapable of dealing with the extra power responsibly.  Funny really about that arbitrary age/number of year licence held they decided upon to govern your ability to drive a high powered car.  I was a lunatic for a quite a lot longer than age 21 behind the wheel, my son should I have one will deal with a 1litre non turbo diesel POS for as long as I can make him ha ha!  If he’s anything like his father that will be for about 5 minutes unfortunately.

An XR6T is infinitely better than the XR6 (which is actually a fairly boring car) however I don’t think a P plater can drive a petrol turbo?

If you plan on doing lots of snow trips I would be very strongly considering 4wd turbo diesels. I’ve driven some “sporty” turbo diesels i.e Golf GTD, Octavia VRS Diesel and the torque when the turbo kicks in can be fun!

Yes ours has low range. The first three models have low range, the top spec has it as an option (WTF?) The dickhead salesman didn’t know it was an option when we were buying. Otherwise we would of had one. Once he said no low range in the spec, I said forget it.

To have it in full 4x4 low range, you also have to have the rear diff lock engaged (yes its a ‘proper’ locker, not electronic) Until you activate the locker, the computer brakes for you. This is great most of the time, but when the hill is not to steep, it keeps you at a very slow speed, which is a pain in the ass. So if its a bit slick under wheel, you have to be on your game when giving it a squirt to get around a bend (mainly climbing) because with all that rear drive, it shoots straight ahead very easily.

The other thing I wish I could shut off in low range is the handbrake assist thing. So the brakes hold for 3 seconds or whatever so you don’t have to do a handbrake start. Anyway, when you try to get up a hill and its not just going to happen. Backing down and stopping so you can get over rocks and shit, the bloody assist thing kicks in, so it makes for an interesting experience.

I am totally over changing gears, all six of them. My mate has ordered an auto Rok, so when he gets it I will give it a whirl and we may swap over to one.smile

That car was awesome at snowy sessions!!!

I used to love the handbrake assist in old subbies! Wish they didn’t get rid of it!

Nothing else in the above post makes sense! LOL

Azz when you say proper locker do you mean an air locker?  As far as I was aware a mechanical locker wasn’t something that could be activated but more like an Eaton detroit locker or a Harrop Trutrac setup?  I wouldn’t imagine the auto has the same feature as the manual as far as hill start mode goes yeah?  Might havta go down to the veedub dealership and have a closer look at some point.

I like that falcon.

But it depends on which turbo diesel 4x4 you are looking at.

Generally speaking, a turbs diesel (4 cylinder) will have similar power but lighter on petrol (if you get a good one).
