Tivo alternative

Avatar

So a friend of mine is thinking of cutting Foxtel. She is actually more addicted to the record function on the box than the Foxtel channels!

I told her if i could find her an alternative would she buy it (and cut foxtel)

So i need a box with dual tuner and recording function and also get her an external hard drive.

What do you guys recommend?

She is an apple person. So that’s why i thought i would ask here first before setting her up with what i would do.

I’m pretty sure appletv does this…

But I just torrent everything anyways to skip the ads.

Whatever you do, don’t get tivo. The box itself is enough proof where they make it twice as big as the actual components for “cooling” reasons.

Yep know TiVo is shite - thats why I am asking for an alternative!

Does Apple TV have dual tuners?

She is not interested in Torrenting everything (baby steps!)

No idea about an apple alternative but a desktop pc with decent graphics card, hdmi out, dual tv tuner card and W7 with media centre and an interent connection smokes cable TV and tivo for cost effectiveness, ease of use for everything other than contracted live sport. If you have cable tv for anything other than live sport you’re crazy, everything else is there on the net to download.

Don’t think Apple TV has any tuners - it’s just for playing stuff off your iTunes.  There are plenty of PVR boxes that will record from free-to-air, although a lot of them have horrible interfaces.  I’m personally running an old PC with tuner card and Windows Media Centre.

Come on her head can’t be that deep in the sand! I taught my Dad whose in his late 60’s how to download stuff, I’m sure she could manage!

Spot on.
You can of course pay to watch TV shows / movies via the iTunes store with your Apple TV.

To be honest she is just too busy. She is a single mother with a baby.

Hitting record in the tv guide is super easy at this point.

If she’s got time to watch TV she has time to for the 5mins to look for and download the next season of Geordie Shore, The Hills, Real Housewives of the OC or whatever it is that women watch as a guilty pleasure these days.

Actually the recordings are for the kid.

She actually doesn’t have much in there for her.

Thats why she is getting rid of Foxtel she doesn’t watch TV herself.
