Awesome Fledz! I’m sure some stores will be willing to give you a discount. If not, just wait till you’re in Whistler.
Make sure you sit on the left side of the bus from Vancouver to Whistler!
It was awesome up there today, plenty of pow already and not too busy! Can’t wait till they open a few more runs now!
I think everyone got soaked yesterday!
The forecast is lookin good for the next couple of days too!!!!!
Not bad at all!
Hmmm pretty sure that is directly from Mountainwatch site which Finney informed me yesterday isn’t very accurate for Whistler. (from the morning update not the current one!)
(I also would be pretty disappointed if that is from Mountainwatch and they are not crediting them for it!)
Yeah in the past 2 seasons I’ve found mountainwatch to be a little off and from what I’ve seen generally half of what they’ve predicted has fallen. Even so.. thats still great news as it’s looking very bare from some of the photos I’ve seen posted.
Upper Insanity under Red Chair is still looking very bare as can be seen in the photo below that was taken by Helen Shettini and posted on her facebook page on opening day. Since then they’ve seen a fair bit more with the Whistler Blackcomb website advertising 52cm in 48hrs so hopefully they’ll start getting a bit more of a base building up.
Here’s a link to the snow forecast website which I’ve used for the past 2 seasons and found to be fairly accurate as far as forecasts go - http://www.snow-forecast.com/resorts/Whistler-Blackcomb/6day/mid
Yeah, I think that they mostly go on the highest elevation for their predictions, so that can easily leave the mid and lower slopes bare, or even wet/rain effected!!!!!
It can all happen so quickly in Whistler. It just takes one storm and a metre of snow blankets the mountain. Looks like the early season conditions are pretty sketchy still, so take it easy and don’t be too adventurous. Soon enough the mountain will have a 2 metre base and you can pretty much ride anything. Just remember, Whistler is super exposed right now and the mountain needs a 2 metre base for most areas to be safe to ride.
Just got word from one of my friends in Whistler.
Not bad, all things considered: it’s snowing like *mad,* so the conditions are ok. Especially in the morning: The terrain towards the end of the runs (e.g. just before Emerald or Red chairs) gets pretty icy, as all traffic is funneled to these areas. But other than that, for November: it’s good snow!
The Wonder Reels - Episode 3: The Stoke
Whistler Blackcomb’s Opening Day tradition is a kind of candy festival - the soft grey light of morning is skittled-through with bright new gear and buzzing skiers and riders, amped by the prospect of making that first turn in 6 months. Some are Opening Day regulars, some are cutting school, some are here for their first time. But when the gate drops, and the gondola starts to load, they are all riding the same wave of Stoke, right to the top.
it looks like Australia does at the best of times
I went up opening day, did 3 runs on Red chair, got totally satched, and then headed straight to Dusty’s for celebratory ceasers!! Certainly wasn’t the best day on Whistler but hey, it’s great to be out again, and a bad day in Whistler still craps all over a good day at Mt Bulla!!
According to others, it’s been pretty good every day since. Can’t wait to get me up there again from Thursday onwards.
Still can’t believe there were peeps camped out in the Whistler gondy line from 2pm on the Friday…. definitely some super keeners around.
If you went on some of the runs that weren’t open yet you could end up in parts up to your chest in powder so couldn’t complain about that for day 3. With that being said it is still early so there are a fair few rocks around and saw quite a few people eat it even on the runs that were open. Can’t comment on what it’s been like today had to let some muscles get over being used for the first time in a long while. Can wait for the real deal on Thursday.
96CM SNOW BASE MAKES FOR A POWDER OPENING ON BLACKCOMB MOUNTAIN, NOVEMBER 22
Whistler Blackcomb EDGE Card Early Bird pricing deadline extended to November 26
WHISTLER, BC November 21, 2012 – Over the last seven days, Whistler Blackcomb has received 120 centimeters of snow, and forecasters are calling for another 25 centimeters in the next five days. Coupled with cool temperatures and impressive snow making, that’s a lot of pow, just in time for Blackcomb Mountain to open on November 22.
“Compared to other ski resorts in North America, Whistler Blackcomb is among the top three for snow fall accumulation so far this season with a 96 centimeter base and growing,” said Stuart Rempel, senior vice president of marketing and sales at Whistler Blackcomb. “Blackcomb Mountain is scheduled to open this Thursday, and despite all of the snow, early season conditions still apply and guests are reminded to obey all mountain signage and stay within the marked operational boundary.”
Six lifts will be in operation on Blackcomb Mountain including the Excalibur Gondola, Wizard Chair, Solar Coaster Chair, Excelerator Chair, Catskinner Chair and Jersey Cream Chair. The Whistler Village Gondola, Creekside Gondola, Emerald Express and Big Red Express will be running on Whistler Mountain bringing the total lifts in operation to 11, including the PEAK 2 PEAK Gondola.
Taken near Squamish, November 21st.
